Nothing beats the satisfaction of demolding a perfect cast! Check out our new stool, crafted with a recycled plywood mold for a ‘stepped’ design and an innovative recipe for the aggregate. Team: Somin Yoo, Jonathan Breuer, Gunwoo Lee, Kali Tindell-Griffin (all M.Arch ’27) Their project explores aggregate and formwork, using reclaimed materials to break the cycle of waste. “Taking inspiration from Carlo Scarpa, this stool borrows from the architectural element of the stair, crossing to create an object that alludes to the optical gestures of MC Escher and is impossible to fully understand from just a single image.” @sominyoo @jonathan.breuer @lee__ha___ @jobasclone @harvardgsd ••• #gsdfablab #modelmaking #harvardgsd #design #architecture #stool #sustainabledesign

Today we are excited to share an inflatable, carriable, and wearable stool called “Roaming Lilly”. The stool is made of layers of TPU film that are welded together on the Zund with an ultrasonic welder head. Swipe to see their fabrication process! Team: Adela Borjas, Angela Lai, Victor Muturi, Brandon Hing (all M.Arch I’27) “Roaming Lilly is designed to be a comfortable sweet seating companion from indoor to outdoor endeavors. Composed of TPU sheets filled with air, five pedals and the central seating are connected with ABS valve and silicon tubing as structural support.” Open call for more stools! Give us a DM. @angelaiwq_ @adela.borjas @victor__muturi @brandon.hing @harvardgsd ••• #gsdfablab #modelmaking #harvardgsd #design #architecture #stool #inflatable #zünd

Unfold a stool?! Today’s featured stool is titled “Sitting Single-Sitting Together”, a transformative stool crafted from plywood laminated onto fabric canvas, topped with a CNC-milled plywood board. Team: Ryan Call, Ananya Dhandapani, Sophia Yiyang Zhang, Claire Mutchnik (all M.Arch ’27) “A stool for one that transforms into a mat for two. This stool focuses on producing very little waste through both manufacturing and shipping, lowering its carbon emissions.“ Open call for more stools! Who can resist a modular stool that can be configured any way you like? Today’s feature is “Two Shapes - One Fold,” a stool crafted from precisely routed modular aluminum pieces on the Zund machine and bent in the Woodshop! Team: Nancy Lu, Kaito Yamamoto-Ran, Donald Oloruntobo (all M.Arch I ‘27), Hessan Sedaghat (MDE) “The modular geometry allows a pluralistic interpretation of how the stool is meant to be arranged and interact with the bodies. Users can gather and bring their own pieces to assemble a stool together, to share a conversation.” Swipe to see how the team brought their design to life through their careful execution! Interested in sharing your stool as well? Day 3! Today, we’re featuring a unique stool crafted from PETG that creates an illusion of floating. The team wanted to explore the bonding of the two materials, wood and PETG, through modifying the PETG’s form to tightly “hug” the top and bottom boards. Title: “Stooool” Team: Ken Chen, Enoch Liu, Erica Xin, Eason Bai (all M.Arch I ’27) “The stool is made from a PETG plastic membrane and two custom-cut plywood end pieces; these components are joined together through a heat-forming process that locks them securely in place.” Swipe to see more of their fabrication process behind the scenes! Day 2 of our “Stools” series featuring final projects from Materials SCI 6126, instructed by Jonathan Grinham. Today’s spotlight: “Construction Waste Stool”, crafted entirely from salvaged stone and wood scraps! Team: Betty Chen, Emma Sheffer, Kate Robinson, Yu Han (all M.Arch ’27). “Our design concept is about repurposing found or reclaimed objects. The focus is on how the two different materials meet and interact with each other without using any adhesives or fixtures.” The stool consists of two parts: the wooden top and the stone legs. The team utilized 3D scanning to digitally represent found stones from a demolition site, and CNC milling to perfectly fit the laminated wood board, that was made of wood scraps from the woodshop, onto the stone legs, relying solely on their own weight for stability. Swipe to see more of their fabrication process behind the scenes! Interested in sharing your stool as well? We‘re thrilled to kick off our series of stools from class Materials SCI 6126, led by Jonathan Grinham. Today, we spotlight the Waffle chair! It was made out of acrylic sheets routed on the Zünd machine, with many test cuts to find the best tolerance for the waffle structure. 🧇 🪑 Team: Livia Miller (M.Arch I ’27), Emily Li (M.Arch I ’27), Eric Wang (M.Arch I ’27), Esabel Cheng (M.Arch I ’26) “Waffle Chair is a generously sized blobby seat for indoor and outdoor use, durable and designed to last for many decades to come, offsetting much of its plastic, embodied carbon.“ Want to share your stool design? Join us at the annual ARTS FIRST Festival, a unique celebration of Harvard’s creative community. “Chashitsu” (“tea room”), crafted by Sky Araki-Russell and Ann Tanaka (both M.Arch I ‘26), features cherry and fir.🌲 Wedged mortise joints, made with the assistance of the CNC router, were finished by hand with chisels to cut them precisely and ensure a fit that is both tight and able to be disassembled or adjusted with the season. The wood structure is complemented by a fabric enclosure that was tea-dyed and flower-pounded by students in a collaborative workshop between GSD/Dye and JapanGSD. From the artists: “This mobile tea room is a project developed together with Harvard University Chado Society, the undergraduate Japanese tea ceremony club. The wooden tea room, constructed from no-nails joinery methods, will provide a meditative space in Harvard Yard during the Arts First festival and become the venue for Chado (tea ceremony) demonstrations and other events.” Stay tuned for more updates! @harvardgsd @harvard_arts @anntanaka ••• #gsdfablab #modelmaking #harvardgsd #design #architecture #fabrication #teahouse #pavilion #tiedye #japaneseculture

Join us at the annual ARTS FIRST Festival, a unique celebration of Harvard’s creative community. Meet the team for project “Home on the Yard”: Chris Behling, Gabriel Schmid, Monica Mendoza, and Ihwa Choi (all M.Arch II ’24). This installation brings attention to vinyl siding, a material commonly used as exterior cladding in the Northeast, revealing an unexpected fabric-like flexibility and subtle translucency. The team built a full-scale prototype in Gund Garden to test ground anchors, refine construction details and order of assembly, to inform the design of pre-assembled modular components built of dimensional lumber in the Fabrication Lab before installation in Harvard Yard. From the artists: “This installation recasts the Yard’s historic landmarks as a backdrop, spotlighting the familiar comfort and understated beauty of our surrounding urban landscape. It serves as a gateway, inviting passersby to step into a space that mirrors the entrance to their own homes, yet reimagined.” Stay tuned for installation at ARTS FIRST! @harvardgsd @harvard_arts @christianbehling @_monica_mendoza @gabrieluschmid @ihwow ••• #gsdfablab #modelmaking #harvardgsd #design #architecture #fabrication

🌿✂️Handcrafted detail promotes purposeful action in creating this study model... By: @drummondpoole Drummond intricately modeled rain gardens by removing the top layer from corrugated cardboard and then arranging a pruned assortment of scavenged buds, twigs, and flowers.🌸 The process was a labor of love and reminiscent of the project proposition: depaving parking lots along industrial edges 🏭 and creating green stormwater infrastructure around the historical (1860s) combined sewer system. 🌧️   Swipe to see Drummond’s vision for a resilient Charlestown with industrial charm! ✂️#GSDfablab #gsdmla #harvardgsd #greennfrastructure #urbandesign #handcrafted
