“thermal burlesque: living between layers in Athens”
layering textiles and apertures to redress a 1949 polykatoikia - the ubiquitous Athenian housing block - this project imagines isomorphic slippages as social, aesthetic, and climatic intervention. as Athens heats up, thermal comfort becomes a critical question. this project imagines pulling the sealed building envelope inward to produce a series of semi-private, semi-interior spaces, acting as insulation, ventilation, and an invitation into a collective experience of the weather.

DOMESTIC GROUND / Medium Density Housing for Chelsea, MA / with @jonathan.breuer
_ unfurling from simultaneous typological and geological research into the histories of living with soil and water on the Massachusetts coast, this proposal for flexible reconfigurable apartment units punctuated by cisterns is animated by a choreography of hydrogeological processes and a spatial offering of abundance toward what may be reaped from choosing to live together. peeled off of the earth, the largely uncapped site can become a zone of domesticity for the more than human residents of the neighborhood while also providing permeability to direct stormwater and recharge groundwater. living together can be understood then as an ecological as much as a social proposition, a possibility of a spatial logic oriented toward a different relationship with ground.

performance hall tower for a university and also for the city of boston.
worked really hard, learned a lot about things like cantilevers and acoustic insulation. thought a lot about how architecture intensifies/resists/reforms/renegotiates relationships of both extraction and reciprocity. still thinking about that tbh it’s a big question.
under the supervision of @millionsarchitecture with extreme gratefulness to @emmasheffer for pictures and also everyone else who made me laugh the last few months ❤️
earlier this fall, connor, inmo and i made this installation at @kirklandgallery using tarps sourced from Gund’s summer construction facelift.
over the summer, working in an office kept at arctic temperatures, @_inmo_omni_ and i talked about a world in a world, an interior landscape illustrated by the systems usually hidden in plain sight. @connorgravelle joined our conversations and we talked about corb, about machines and bodies and architectural slippage. and somehow all of those conversations became a 32’ tarp curtain with an elevation drawn on the Zund suspended from the ceiling of the gallery, creating strange new spaces and plays of light.
grateful to have been able to think and learn and play with this project
&& thank you @emmasheffer for incredible documentation

spent the last few months thinking about civic centers and the design of shared space. amidst the landscape of violence and state-sponsored repression of the present moment the project of finding space to live, play, and learn together feels politically urgent.
here’s my project; a roof which kisses the ground becomes a new park surface, beneath which a rec center, library, banquet hall, and classrooms propose unexpected playful adjacencies.
here’s to hoping (and organizing and working…) toward a world where civic spaces could be like this.
