Oliver, surprisingly, is a strong flier considering the cone he wears to stop his plucking. He flies the same route as Grumpy but he can’t achieve the height of Grumpy’s flight path.
Facts about lovebirds:
* They are monogamous, mating for life.
* If a mate dies, the survivor pines for them. A single bird may become depressed if there is no human or feathered companion interaction.
* There are nine species of lovebirds. Most have green bodies and colour variations on their heads.
* Lovebirds inhabit the forests and savanna of Sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar.
* Feral populations are found in San Francisco, southwest cities of the US and Africa. Lovebirds feed from backyard bird feeders.
* In the wild, lovebirds live in cavities such as holes in trees, rocks, shrubs, cacti and crevices in buildings.
* It is common for some lovebirds to be aggressive. They are territorial and are not known to get along with other birds. Lovebirds can get jealous and hormonal during mating season. The peach-faced lovebird is known for aggressive behaviour. There are exceptions as Oliver is the sweetest peach-faced lovebird.
* Lovebirds can carry yeast bacteria (cryptococcal neoformans) that can affect humans. The bacteria spores are only picked up from contact with pigeon feces. The parasite Encephalitozoon hellem can spread to humans with compromised immune systems.
* The black-cheeked lovebird, native to Zambia, is listed as Vulnerable, one step from Endangered. This is due to habitat loss and desiccation of water bodies.

Grumpy is a wild-caught bird from Indonesia. When he came to me, I was told that Grumpy was five years old. When I took him to the vet, she estimated him to be in his 20’s. She gave him the date of his birthday.
I have had Grumpy since 1988. Everyday when I uncover him, I am so grateful that he is standing on his perch looking at me.
Grumpy and I have something in common. We’re both seniors.He has white feathers, and I have white hair.

Do you ever have problems going out when you have a pet at home?
Poor Grumpy. We were at a wedding, and it was a full afternoon and evening. I had to come home during the reception to give him his meds and feed him. I went back for a delicious dinner. (Don’t tell Grumpy.) We came home after 10:30 and Grumpy was so hungry.
Whenever we go out in the evening, I always have to come home early to care for Grumpy.
For Grumpy, I make sacrifices. He is worth it.

There are moments when Grumpy really is grumpy. Notice the raised crest, the way the feathers are tight against his body, the erratic movements and his tall stance? Beware - it’s attack mode. That is the time to leave the room. Give him a few minutes and he comes back to his senses - a goofy cockatoo.
Dragon Boat Race Weekend
What does Grumpy have to do with dragon boating? Do you love your pet so much that you talk and think about them all the time? That’s why Grumpy’s sticker is on my paddle. When the paddling gets intense, I look at Grumpy and think—I can do this!
If you look closely at my paddle, notice the gouges on the top curved part. No, Grumpy did not chomp on it. It was me hitting the side of the boat. I’m sure my paddling techniques have improved so if I get a new paddle, I won’t wreck it. And of course my new paddle will feature Grumpy and his little brother Jak Jak.

Good thing Grumpy is doing his share of work around the house. That means I can work on the next book - Uh-Oh! Trouble With Chores. It has gone through two professional edits and will be sent to another editor this week. Illustrations are scheduled to start in June. This is a long process because I work at a snail’s pace! Isn’t Grumpy helpful?

Can you believe that Grumpy can be a little devil? Not all parrots are sweet all the time. And yes, it all depends on their mood. Grumpy always swoops me when I drink out of my metal water bottle so I have to hide when I drink from it. I think he is trying to protect me from the water bottle.
