I spent a lot of hours recently chasing big red drum. I will get into that later, but it’s worth sharing the baits I found most successful to help you prepare. Of course you must get the size and profile correct but an overlooked aspect is efficiency. Casting distance (amount of time spent in the water) and availability (amount of downtime for retying). Anyone that knows me knows how much I focus on efficiency in all aspects of my life. Big reds chomp soft plastics to shreds so I have found that the 7” @invincible_jigs seam swimmer (cut down to 5” to increase cast distance) is a key part of the equation. I was tired of super gluing the elastec plastic to the jig so @grittyjigs helped me with the best solution to the problem. He created a double wire keeper that doesn’t let go of the elastec plastic. I didn’t need glue and I only needed one bait. After many fish, it’s still in perfect shape. This combo was the most productive. The rod is an @edgerods_official Mbr696 which was perfect for long casts, high sensitivity and power. I had to wait 7 months for it but it was worth the wait. And I paired it with a @batesfishingco salty 150. This setup is insanely light for the power it provides. That should get you going on big reds or stripers.
