When Holly sent through the scripts and character descriptions for CRACKHEAD, I instantly knew actors would be jumping at the chance to read for these roles.
And hell yeah they did.
We saw an incredible range of talent come through the room. Bold, funny, fearless (and sometimes heartbreaking) performances.
Casting really is a kind of science, and I’m always blown away by the calibre of actors working in Aotearoa <3
And Carmel-Maria’s self tape for Bumblebee where she cast every single one of her family members in a group therapy scene… I will NEVER forget.

last night was so fab. we got to see the first episode of THE RIDGE. so so so proud of the cast and their work - stunning and v intense.. 🔥🚜
it’s a fucking cool and zippy show that rocks along so you have to keep up- I don’t think I’ve seen anything like it from nz before! It’s out OCTOBER 21 ON NEON and 23 on BBC2!!!!
can’t wait to see the characters grow and shift and surprise us in the next episodes. 👀👀

THE RIDGE premieres 21st October on Sky Open and Neon in NZ, and on BBC iPlayer and BBC Scotland in the UK. Episodes will also air on BBC Two from the 23rd!
It was such a privilege to work very closely with Douglas Mackinnon (Sherlock, Line of Duty) casting this new psychological thriller.
Some pinch-me moments:
- Watching Lauren Lyle’s killer audition tape for the first time… and then watching it again (and again!) because of how slick, nuanced, and intense it was. Whenever I needed a steer on tone or style, I’d go back to her masterclass tape.
- Casting the incredible Jay Ryan… who I’ve been a HUGE huge huuuuge fan of since Being Eve.
- The first cast table read, with Lauren and Jay side by side- the chemistry was chefs kiss kiss.
- Working with my gorgeous best girlie and stunning assist, @johannacosgrove - every day was creative and fun.. shout out Lebanese Grocer for the mountains of shawarma consumed!
I cannot wait to see all the epic performances and beautiful work from this stellar ensemble. I’m in awe of what they do and I am so excited for them to be celebrated.

oops.. I forgot to celebrate this lil achievement from a month ago. @n00bseries took out the special jury mention award for CAST at @cinemajove and that’s a huge win for this brilliant lil show that we poured our hearts and souls into casting. thank you to my angel girls @lusty.productions and @victoriabboult for your support and trust and just overall iconic-ness. what a fantastic show and yes.. the CAST are SO AMAZING (if I do say so myself….😛🤭)

this one feels extra special because:
a. the whole cast/crew/production was amazing,
b. i got to give birth onscreen to a stunning hybrid aannnnd…
c. my dad worked in art dept for the pilot episode waaaay back pre-pandemic in 2019.. he still rocks his Sweet Tooth crew puffer while i’ve got my crew keep cup and picnic blanket hehe 🩷💕

there is so much to the Gloriavale story that has not been told and i cannot wait for everyone to see.
Natalie Malcon is a beast and it was wildly empowering to get to witness her never ending dedication to tell the real stories of these real and brave people.
