It’s been a journey for @gregory.t and I to make this custom collaborative column for @ceramics_x_fiber exhibition during Detroit’s first NCECA conference! So many friends helped us along the way 🖤🖤🖤 Scroll to the end to see the tricky way Greg’s perferated vessels barely fit in our kiln! 😱😬😮‍💨 Thanks to Michael Olzsewski (The TreeTop Craftsman) who doesn’t have social media. Also @chelseaayumikoga , @alecwsmith.design , @annaiburke , @jessikae15 & @katie.shulman Here’s our statement! “2026 marks a 20 year anniversary of the artists first sharing a studio space at the Russell Industrial Center. Russell Industrial Center was designed by Albert Kahn and the Boyer Campbell Building which houses this exhibition was designed by Albert Kahn-trained architect C.F.J. Barnes. Flared mushroom columns are a ubiquitous and iconic architectural feature to Kahn designed industrial buildings of Detroit. The collaborative pair of Greg Tom & AndyT Thompson have recreated a ¾ scale version of one of the many flared top columns found on the 3rd & 4th floors of this building. This sculpture is about both site-specificity and site dislocation. The artists are imposing a structural column from an upper floor, that was not intended for public view, onto the 1st floor that is now serving as a gallery. The materials and methods deployed in this installation have legacies within the respective artists’ creative lexicons that challenge the perceived permanence of the concrete column. Tom’s perforated vessels are about articulating a volume through which the viewer experiences phenomena of light & shadow rather than serving as a conventional ceramic container. Thompson uses the repurposed plastic grocery bags as permanent signifiers of temporary containment and consumption. In our two decades of residing and working in Detroit, we have witnessed the decay and impermanence of the industrial landscape.” #nceca
