Scarabei is a collection of patch miniatures on the modular synthesizer; an appreciation to the hidden force and persistence of the Scarabaeidae family.
From the fleeting, shimmering presence of airborne species to the dense, grinding activity of larvae deep within wood and soil, Scarabei is a tribute to their cycles of decay, transformation, and renewal. Each miniature acts as a study in movement and material, where pulses, noise, and resonance mirror the rhythms of nature’s smallest engineers.

Not two, not four, but six limbs move in rhythm, scatter in chaos, march in unity. With antennae raised and wings poised, the insect world teems with sound, form, and ingenuity.
For re:natura #06 – Hexapoda, we invite you to explore the vast and varied realm of insects through sound. Hexapoda – the scientific term for six-legged arthropods – offers a rich terrain for sonic exploration: from the faint subterranean rustle of Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa (the European mole cricket) and the soil-turning toil of Anoplotrupes stercorosus (the dor beetle), to the sky-darkening migrations of Danaus plexippus (the monarch butterfly) and the swarming cacophonies of Schistocerca gregaria (the desert locust).
We are calling for works that respond to the insect as biological marvel, ecological force, metaphor, and mystery. Dive deep into the buzzing labyrinth: topics might include colony behavior, parasitism, mimicry, metamorphosis, swarm intelligence, extinction, pollination, or the evolutionary genius of adaptation.
The more specific, the better. Get inspired by iridescent carapaces, pheromonal communication, formic architecture, cicada choruses, mosquito drones.

As the winter season takes over the northern hemisphere, we’re thrilled to announce a new solo release on re:natura!
UK composer Deniz Dortok’s ‚nocturna‘ is a sonic reflection on light pollution and the fragile ecosystems that come alive in darkness. Inspired by Johan Eklöf’s Darkness Manifesto, the piece blends acoustic instruments, field recordings, natural objects and poetry to evoke the delicate “endangered sounds” of the night – fractured by the harsh glare of the modern city.
Next to an acoustic instrumentation and spoken words, the composition also includes electronics, which have been created by re:natura’s Sofia Zaiceva)

New York / Boston-based composer Samuel Long grows a living sonic ecosystem from modular synths alone. These pieces don’t play like programmed sequences—they behave like organisms: adaptive, unpredictable, and deeply entangled.
Rooted in the “wood wide web” of fungal mycelium, Hyphae translates ecological processes into sound. Each tone is both signal and sustenance, weaving into a shifting network of feedback loops.
