Is This the Freest I Will Ever Be? 2025 was a year of immense change. I uprooted my entire life in Berlin and moved to LA. My only goal was to move, find a home and work enough to get into the union. And to my surprise, upon arrival in California, I walked into so many open arms, helping hands, inspiring encounters that 2025 turned into a year of abundance. I joined CAS, MPSE and IATSE Local-700, got to know hundreds of interesting people, made new friends and helped more filmmakers tell their stories through sound than in any year before. With projects between LA, Chicago, New York, Vienna, Munich, Dublin, Berlin, Helsinki, London, and yet not being bound to any company or studio, I’m starting to think: Is this the freest I will ever be? The 2nd film I mixed that premieres in this year's Berlinale Special section is KEIN TIER. SO WILD. aka NO BEAST. SO FIERCE. After BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ, the wonderful Burhan Qurbani @nevercool_ever again partners with my dear friends @coccosophie and @jochen_laube from @sommerhaus_filmproduktion for this modern adaptation of Shakespeare's Richard III. I find @berlinale to be the perfect place to show this film to the world as the playfulness Burhan applies to the German language is, in my biased opinion, second to none. Get ready for this one! Great News: 1 of 2 Berlinale films I had the pleasure of contributing to this year is KÖLN 75. My dear friends @sol.bondy and @fred.burle of #onetwofilms partnered up with writer and director @idofluk to tell the story of Vera Brandes, who was only 17 years old when she organized Keith Jarret‘s famous cologne concert, which became the best-selling solo jazz album of all time. The film premieres in the prestigious Spezial section on opening weekend. As supervising sound editor and re-recording mixer I teamed up with dialog supervisor @lajosw and sound designer @frederikvandemoortel . Frederik, who himself is also a composer, helped us in our mission to turn the sound of Köln 75 into something that is like Jazz itself: improvised, fresh, unexpected. Frederik and I also contributed the rhythm track of the film‘s score which is made up of the kind of sounds you’re not supposed to get out of a piano. No pianos were harmed in the making of this film… I think 🤞 Thank you Ido for this sweet film and for taking us with you on its journey.
