I come from a time when all images were real tangible things, like a negative, slide or a print. It them moved to digital and though mind blowing where its gone there is a loss of authenticity to some degree. Dont get me wrong, Ive always embraced technology, I get it. NFT’s… will see but for me there will always be a place for the real thing. Enjoyed printing and stretching this one titled Aloe Jeffreys, some beautiful colours! @ocean_collective @printcollective.sa #oceancollectiveart #surfart #surfprints #oceanart #oceanprints #surfphotography #oceanphotography #intereriordesign #interiordecor #officedecor #supportsmallbusiness

Not all images are planned. I shot this while swimming back to the yacht we were living aboard on a trip to Madagascar. I had just finished a surf session and was slowly making my way back when i noticed this traditional pirogue heading home. I kicked into gear to get closer and managed to fire off a few frames as i bobbed with the swell looking into the light. Its one of my favourite images and just shows, right time right place and you never know when that's going to be... Digging through drives in search of a specific shot of Frankie O for Zag's next issue and came across this of his son Koby. This was the day of the winter down the South Coast quite a few moons ago. It just happened to coincide while I was shooting Stab in the Dark with Dane Reynolds so there was an all-time crew out. Definitely up there with the best and biggest I swam this spot over the years. Epic times! #surfafrica #surfexplore

It’s been a few years since I was down for the JBay event and was fortunate enough to be able to come down for the finals. Other than having a saffa still in the running, what a day! I will say one thing, not much has changed. The contest infrastructure has evolved but it’s the same old faces, we all just got a little greyer, a little rounder… so good to catch up! Till next time

Signs of winter. It's early days but it’s great to be back behind the lens and catching up with some familiar faces. @zigzagsurf #surfafrica #surfexplore

There is the Golden Hour and then there was that magical 5 minutes we once got at Saint-Leu many moons ago! Still never seen anything like it... Time to start searching again #surfexplore

The Cover That Never Was Randomly, this image of Jordy (the original, not the cover) popped up on my feed the other day. It’s probably close to 20 years old, and I have no idea how it even got out—whether it was used or posted, or by whom… But it did remind me of a cool, yet also somewhat cruel story. Back in the day, the cover of a magazine was everything—every surfer wanted to be on the cover, and every photographer strived to get the winning shot. It was, in some way, or at least it felt like, the pinnacle of achievement. It was also the most closely guarded secret; the selection process and the people involved were kept within a tight group, and only the final winning image would ever be shared. So, back to my story: This image of mine must’ve, or obviously made it all the way to the final layouts and even printed proofs, just to get pipped. There’s a price and barcode, but no issue number. I’ll have to do some digging to see which image eventually won, or maybe just leave it there—but I think it’s a pretty cool cover, nevertheless. @jordysmith88 #cover #surfmagazine

My first ever image in Surfer Mag, 2003. It just happened to be the annual which was oversized and I think that made it more special to me. Surfer Mag really was the pinnacle for photographers back in the day. All this talk of The Goat retiring... had to dig it out. @kellyslater @surfer_magazine
