Fish Water People Film Festival, Film Spotlight: Patso by Greg Cairns (@greg.cairns ).🛶 Coming soon to a theater near you this May/June. Check out the film trailer and get your tickets 👇 "It's never too late to be on the river. It's never too late to make new friends and spend time with them outside." Meet Patso, a woman who relearned to kayak in her late 50s. Filmmaker Greg Cairns brings us this heartwarming and funny story that shows what's possible when we dive into the river community around us. Greg's path to filmmaking started with an 8mm camcorder making BMX videos in middle school, then evolved through years as a Middle Fork of the Salmon river guide. When asked what water means to him: "Clean moving water makes me happy. Being near moving water makes me feel alive." We feel you Greg! Greg's message is the same message that's at the heart of this film festival: "We don't need to be professionals or do extreme things. Let's just spend a bit more time outside together, and we'll all be better for it." 🎬 Experience Patso at one of @californiatrout 's Fish Water People Film Fest screenings near you this May & June. 🎟️ Get your tickets now at the link in bio or at caltrout.org/film-festival

In her twenties, Patricia “Patso” Stow watched the guides on California’s Stanislaus River, and thought, “I could do that.” In her fifties, Patso returned to the river, re-learning to kayak to share a love of the river with her teenaged sons. Don’t miss the Digital Premier of Patso: A River Life- A portrait of California community legend, proud river mama and (retired) river guide Patricia Stow. Live on #YouTube Mother’s Day 2026 Filmed & directed by @greg.cairns | Featuring: @PS.rivergirl | With support from @nrsweb & @jacksplasticwelding #MothersDay #Rivermama #PatsoFilm

Between the Adriatic Sea, Velebit Mountains and the Julian Alps lies a patchwork of rolling hills, farmland, and villages that makes up northwest Croatia and western Slovenia. A beautiful place for bike touring. At this point, we looked forward to the Soca River Valley and the cooler weather of the Alps. The journey was more than halfway over and we could relax. We would likely make it to Ljubljana on two wheels. thanks @hyperlite_mountain_gear @stio @venture.handmade @relentlesscomponents @transdinarica @durangocyclery and @ridewithgps for the help.

Karstified limestone is ordinary limestone that has been deeply dissolved and reshaped by slightly acidic water, creating a super‑permeable landscape. For a place as green as the coastal mountains of Croatia, there is surprisingly little surface water. Collecting rainwater from defunct mountain lodges ended up being mandatory. thanks @hyperlite_mountain_gear @stio @venture.handmade @relentlesscomponents @transdinarica @durangocyclery and @ridewithgps for the help.

Some lessons from Croatia. -Bikes aren't allowed in Dubrovnik but if you pay the ferry captain extra he'll take you there anyway without telling you about the bike part. -When your pedal falls off, make sure it happens on a quiet road. -The coastal mountains are amazing. -Wild camping is illegal so wait til dark to set up the tent. -Bikes are randomly allowed on trains. -Always remember to enjoy the ride. thanks @hyperlite_mountain_gear @stio @venture.handmade @relentlesscomponents @durangocyclery and @ridewithgps for the help.

I'm struggling a bit to know how to shape the 25 hours of footage from our journey. I'm well on my way to a easy and watchable 10 hours... There's a lot there to say. From the riding and landscape to how the breakup of Yugoslavia and the conflicts that followed have tangibly shaped the people and culture. Before that, the scars of the world wars. Before that, the Romans, Ottomans, and Venetians. There are important lessons to learn, especially in the context of our "united" states. The fragility of nations and the immense consequences for deciding intolerance is the best path forward. On a bike, the world around you shapes your ride. There's no escaping it or separating it. It's why I find it difficult to just make a "bike film". It would leave out too much of the story. These images are from Northern Albania, Montenegro, and Southwest Croatia. thanks @hyperlite_mountain_gear @stio @venture.handmade @relentlesscomponents @durangocyclery and @ridewithgps for the help.

I'm thrilled that two of my films will be at @wildandscenicfilmfestival this year. Pronghorn Passage - Supported by @nationalwildlife and the Big Sky Film Grant @montanafilmoffice406 Set in southwest Montana, the film explores the complex relationship between ranchers, wildlife, and the fences that crisscross the land. Focusing on the migration of pronghorn and other native species, the story follows ranchers including Ken Holland and wildlife biologist Colin Peterson as they work together to remove old, impassable fences and replace them with wildlife-friendly designs. Through candid conversations and on-the-ground volunteer efforts, the film reveals how historic fencing—once essential for livestock—now poses life-threatening barriers to migrating animals. The narrative highlights the evolving mindset among ranchers, who increasingly see themselves as stewards of both their land and its wildlife, balancing tradition, practicality, and conservation. Personal stories and striking imagery underscore the urgency and hope of collaborative projects that aim to restore vital migration corridors, ensuring that both ranching and wildlife can thrive for generations to come. #wildandscenicfilmfestival #sonyalpha @sonyalpha

Thanks @bikepackingcom for the press. This was a B-roll shoot submerged in after-the-fact self-squirmy VO superglue. Comedy is scary! I'm glad it turned out edible. Thanks @hyperlite_mountain_gear @freewheelmission @relentlesscomponents @durangocyclery @sixmoondesigns
