Last week marked the end of another successful grazing season on the Sefton coast, as we waved goodbye to the cattle who help us care for this special landscape in partnership with @lancashirewildlifetrust 🐄
We spent some time with David from @greensefton to learn more about why the cows are so important. Their grazing in Ainsdale and Birkdale reduces biomass on the dunes which is a key part of protecting this Site of Special Scientific Interest. Without it, nutrients would build up, turning sand into soil and reducing the rare biodiversity the dunes are known for🏖️
Throughout the cows' stay, Green Sefton staff carry out daily welfare checks, arrange vet appointments and monitor fencing to keep them safe and happy🐮
The cows head home each April as species like ground nesting birds, Natterjack Toads, Sand Lizards and Northern Tiger Beetles begin to thrive🦎🐸🦅
We're looking forward to welcoming our special guests back next Autumn/Winter!👋
The usual dog exclusion zone comes in to force at #ainsdale beach from today, 1st May until 30th September inclusive.
As in previous years dogs are not permitted in an area defined by the sea and the boundary of the parking area as shown on the image below.
Dogs are welcome on other areas of the beach, North or South of the car parking area as long as they are under close control, do not disturb wildlife or damage habitat.
All fouling must be cleared immediately.

Yesterday we waved goodbye to the @lancashirewildlifetrust cattle as they mooooved on from their winter grazing spots in Ainsdale and Birkdale 🐄👋
They’ve done a great job once again, it’s always a pleasure having them in the borough🫶
Each winter, @greensefton and @lancashirewildlifetrust bring grazing animals onto our Local Nature Reserves to help manage vegetation.
Their grazing helps keep vegetation in check, encouraging diverse plant species and supporting rare dune specialists like Natterjack Toads, Sand Lizards and Northern Tiger Beetles🤝
Great news for the Friends Of Kings Gardens volunteers, who will be able to use this donation presented on Silcock’s balcony bar …towards making these beautiful gardens look even better @standupforsouthport@bactauk@serena_silcock_prince_@kingsgarden 💜🌿

A recent fire on our dunes shows just how quickly damage can happen☹️
Thanks to @mersey_fire and our @greensefton team, it was put out fast, but these fires threaten the rare reptiles, amphibians and plants that make our coastline so special! 🦎🐸
This summer, please help protect our dunes and remember:
❌No BBQs or fires anywhere on the coast❌
