As long as our governments are captured by fossil fuel corporations, we will continue to foreclose our future to prop up their failing bottom line. Weāre not out-numbered, weāre out-organized. Help us build the resistance to Smithās oil pipeline and fight for the green solutions we need: https://bcgreens.ca/volunteer/
Another report from @sherepunjabradiocanada on our AI Data Centre moratorium. Working people take shorter showers and let their plants die, just to see data centres hoard the water weāre trying to save. This governmentās ābuild first, regulate laterā model serves corporate interests over people and planet. #ai #datacentres #bcpoli
Todayās reporting by the Times Colonist on our call for a moratorium on building AI data centres in BC, until the environmental, health, and data risks of these facilities are understood and regulated.
Emily Lowan Supports Opposition to Nanaimo Data Centre, Continues Calls for Moratorium at Press Conference
Snuneymuxw TERRITORY / NANAIMO, B.C. ā
BC Green Party Leader Emily Lowan called for an AI data centre moratorium until the province steps in with real regulations during a press conference in Nanaimo, BC. She was joined by local residents concerned about an announced Nanaimo data centre, Hilary Eastmure and Paul Manly ā city councillors who voted against rezoning the proposed site ā and advocate Kathryn Barnwell.
Residents of Nanaimo have expressed concerns about the newly approved data centreās water usage and the security of their local watershed.
āCities are operating without a safety net. With no provincial or federal action, local governments are forced to regulate data centres themselves,ā said Lowan. āThey simply do not have sufficient resources or power to do so effectively.ā
Eastmure, Manly, and Barnwell spoke to frustrations over the provinceās hesitancy to regulate data centres, arguing that it is not viable for local governments to provide the necessary regulatory framework.
Left with few options, the City of Nanaimo has said they will charge this data centre $60,000 when it consumes beyond its water limits. āThe problem with that,ā Lowan stated, āis charging a big corporation a minor fee is like giving a parking ticket to a billionaire. Itās just the cost of doing business.ā
āI am calling for a moratorium on AI data centres until the risks of these facilities are understood and regulated to protect local communities,ā Lowan concluded. āI am urging our government to put people over profit.ā
In the United States, 50 jurisdictions have issued moratoriums on data centres, with more legislation on the way. Similar actions have been taken by Irish and Dutch governments.
The VCBC is a life-saving service in our community. If you believe that chronically ill and low income people deserve access to the medication that works for them - call Nina Krieger (250-356-2178) and tell her: Hands off the VCBC. #compassionclub #victoriabc
Recent polling in Cowichan Valley looks great for the BC Greens ā but the only way to secure a win is with youth organizers leading the charge and bringing their vision to life. ā”ļø
Meet our leader Emily Lowan and chat about the issues that matter to you, ways we can organize together and build youth-led momentum in the Cowichan Valley! #bcgreens #cowichanvalley
A housing crisis. An affordability crisis. A climate crisis.
Instead of building affordable homes, bringing down the costs of groceries, or securing our fresh water as droughts get worse ā our government is celebrating a handout to TELUS to build AI data centres in the heart of Vancouver.
Data sovereignty is important, but handouts for big AI and TELUS arenāt how we get there.
They just lost a petabyte of user data. Their health app stole information from working families just looking for a doctor.
I talked about more issues with this build-first regulate-later model on CBC (see images).
Iām travelling to Nanaimo to meet with community members who have been on the frontlines of the battle between the security of our water and the greed of big tech.
Help me and the BC Greens keep up the fight against corporate exploitation.
