I am a bit in my feels over this, so I’m a try to be eloquent and stuff..
When Mike and I made this, it was January 2021. It was after lockdowns and pandemic scares. I was new to South Florida, a fresh divorced dad to be, no friends nearby, no support network.. last time I properly skated was maybe in 2001.
I had seen Mike (my dearest closest friend, & mentor) back on skates since around 2013? Mike would periodically send me photos and videos of him in crazy situations, climbing street lamps, getting towed by a hippie bus, flying down an abandoned parking lot in New Orleans all while wearing skates and with a camera in his hand.
This planted a seed in my mind on documenting my friend, his deep love of perpetual motion, and his love of photography / video.
In January of 2021 Mike and I reunited, we went on to make this short film merely based on the fact that we were both having a blast, nerding out on film stuff, finding cool spots to film and skate.
During our second week of filming, Mike, let me try on his skates. It was the first time I put skates on in over 20 years. The feeling that went through me was the equivalent of meeting my inner child for the first time in a very long time. The reunion was very tender and much needed.
Currently I’m just basking in the love of this sport, my friends and family, and the outpouring of support over this little (BIG!!) victory. It’s showing me that I’m moving in the right direction, and there is space for documenting our favorite wheeled sports from a loving a creative perspective.
I feel a sense of duty to keep documenting the skating art form in all of its many facets. So many stories to be told, so here’s to at least a hundred more. 🍻
