Think of the sublime, and dream of a fresher hell,
Because no one lives in the area.

Cosmic Background Radiation (2023)
Mild steel, seasoned with motor oil.
Auctioned off at @newwork_witsfineart fundraiser a couple weeks back. Don't usually make non sounding work but here we are
When @amiesoudien and I moved into our home a few years ago we dreamed of hosting exhibitions and performances in the space. By pooling our combined skill sets, professional network and value systems, we hoped to develop a platform for artists to be critically engaged on their work - especially those who are not signed by a gallery or do not have a solo show under their belt.
Now, a few years later and after a great deal of careful work, this idea has blossomed into the reality of @1004.jhb
We are incredibly grateful to open the space to the public from this weekend for the first exhibition, to showcase the truly inspiring work of our dear friend Kaelo Molefe @kwena_sesame
We really believe in this work and are looking forward to continuing to develop this space. For now, head over to 1004.co.za or link in bio on @1004.jhb to book a viewing!
Submitted my MAFA dissertation today. Went though a lot to get here and super relieved. Also it's a record. Hope it passes lol. Worked pretty hard to make this happen. I made a bunch of sound sculptures in subterranean tunnels at wits and performed and recorded them. Now the submission is out the way, I will be working on a public release of this record. Will be available digitally, and will have a super limited edition vinyl release with handmade steel cases, a paper based artwork, supporting notes etc. More an that in a few weeks tho.
Flashing back to a nicer time when we could embrace each other and dance together. This must have been a natural selection @kimon_de_greef or a @waxonsa (either way s/o to both parties) circa 2015 or 2016 when I had the great privilege of opening for the legendary DJ MIGHTY @mayibuyentsatha
I remember closing the set with @cinematic_orchestra ft @rootsmanuvaofficial all things to all men and Mighty freaked cause he loves the track too and came up to the booth and we all danced and sang along. Thanks @lotte_manicom for sending the pic this am, made me smile and feel all nostalgic.
If we take seriously the notion that materials and space hold memory, what song would they sing? If everything is an echo of the big bang, is all connected through vibration? This speculative work thinks through the inbetweens of the materiality and implications of steel, resonances and hauntings, cities and heterotopias, noises and silences, rhythms and frequencies. Situated in the subterranean service tunnels beneath the Wits School of Arts, a series of activatable interventions which disrupt the musical instrument, the sound effects machine and the sculpture, create a space for deep listening and sound making.
The work requires activation and participation for it to be realised. I have programmed three events over the course of the exhibition for the particular purpose of exploring different aspects of the work and its sonic possibilities:
Wednesday, 23 October
18:00-21:00
Deep listening session / performance
Friday, 25 October
18:00-21:00
Collective improvisation / participatory sound space
Saturday, 26 October
13:00
Walkabout / listenthrough
All events will take place in the Basement/Service Tunnels of the Wits School of Arts (WSOA) building, Braamfontein.
Once you have arrived at the School of Arts building, kindly follow the signs to the basement. Please note that the service tunnels are dusty and the ceilings are low. It will be mandatory to wear hard hats whilst in the space
