An ongoing sound piece entitled "Only Embers - In its purest form" for scripted voice and deteriorating tape. This piece is built on field recordings and readings from an ever-expanding script, which is consistently fed into a single reel of tape; each performance operates as an overdub session. Continuously adding to the tape. Its material is splitting, and voices are wavering. Full video on YouTube. Link in Bio.

Excerpts from my radiophonic performance at The Point of Order as part of @societyworkandpolitics Ellipses Creative Journal workshops alongside the amazing and inspiring Bettina Malcomess. Built on my ongoing research exploring sonic dispossession, the apartheid soundscape, coloured identity, and contrapuntal reading/composition as a medium to write familial histories of forced removals in the Eastern Cape. 🎬alternative1987

The @swissnationalsciencefoundation Spark project « Echoes of the Southern African independence era in Swiss journalism archives » explored how journalism archives in Switzerland (re)sound with echoes of Southern African liberation struggles. We listened to sound recordings of major political events, interviews with politicians and activists, but also recordings of small talk, background sounds and noises. We thought about the meaning of these recordings in the present moment. What stories can we tell with them about the past, present and future? And how does their meaning shift, depending on who listens to them, and where they are listened to? We present the results of the project in three outputs: a podcast with the title « Echoes of Southern African liberation struggles », a publication and a graphic score. You find them on our website: independence-echoes.org The podcast « Echoes of Southern African liberation struggles » is also available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Podcast Addict. I am immensely grateful to the @swissnationalsciencefoundation for funding this project, the University of Lausanne for hosting it, and Ruth Weiss and the @basler_afrika_bibliographien for allowing us to work with the Ruth Weiss Sound Archives. And of course, a big thank you goes to all the collaborators: @lynseychutel , @talya_lubinsky , @cara.stacey , @nirentolsi , @andreivanw , @ma.moyo and @dambakushamba !
