Can’t wait to get over to @blackcatbar619 this Friday! 5/15 @ 9pm : Sharing the space with the wonderful @portvelvet (members of: Menomena, Ramona Falls, Shins, Radiation City) & our good friend @grampadrew ✨✨✨ Get by, Tune in 📺
With two days left to vote, I've been horribly remiss in giving @somesmartalec credit for this project. If there were a producer category, Alec should get this award.
He invited me to Studio West, set up a bunch of stupid expensive mics, and with baffles and rugs managed to make the "big room" feel intimate and appropriate for these stripped down compositions. We set out to capture raw emotion and I think he did this rather admirably. Nothing fancy, but sometimes restraint is the hardest to stick to while still serving the songs.
If you think I'm an asshole who doesn't deserve your vote, maybe that's fair. But Alec is a delight. And since Best Producer isn't a thing here, I'm going to declare this nomination for Best Local Recording is for @audioalec instead!
Vote for Alec! Link in bio.
It's okay if you haven't voted daily. I've forgotten a few times myself. But with only 3 days of voting left, I'd sure appreciate your help in closing this out with a strong finish!

I was about 13 when my dad bought me this ATC. First time out I endoed over the handle bars and watched it perform a perfect flip as it flew over my head and bounced away.
This was a 90cc bored out to 120cc. I'd only ever heard of one other 90 that had a bigger bore. Word was, there was a guy at speedway 117 that raced a 90 bored to 150cc and he died racing it. Mine would go toe to toe with the newly released 185s, only losing at the top end on a long stretch.
Here I am jumping it a couple days after getting my skills up. Sweet AC/DC shirt too.
And yes, it was the 80s, so no matter how many times I flipped or crashed this thing, I rode regularly with no helmet, in flip-flops! Eventually, we bent the axle from doing 6 ft+ jumps over gravel piles at Morrison's sand plant. My buddy Seth was riding when he completely cleared the gravel-pile we used as a ramp and hit the hard-pack dirt with a painful bounce that even his young back felt it as he flew off and ate dirt. But he walked it off because that's just what you did when your body was young and resilient.
This is far from the only miracle that the God of Stupid People helped us survive. Fun times!
Love seeing the daffodils bloom at the #IdyllwildAirship. It's extra special today as Alison and I celebrate our 32nd anniversary. As the song goes, "Now I am grown and out on my own, happy and married with a lovely little home". I love you @ali.mac.art
I'm proud of this San Diego Music Awards nomination for these little songs. If you like it too, you can vote for it once a day.
Voting is now open at: /p/san-diego-music-awards
Big thanks to the @sdmusicawards for the nomination of my grampadrew EP, It's Getting Darker for Best Local Recording! Give it a listen on Bandcamp! Link in Bio
TL:Dr If you need to contact me, call Alison, because my phone is out of order and I'm uninclined to replace it anytime soon. If you don't know Alison's number, I probably don't know you well enough to call you back anyway. Go touch grass! Or snow. See you in the physical world.
Off Grid: Day 3
If you've tried contacting me lately, we're intentionally snowed-in up in Idyllwild.
What wasn't intentional was a media and connectivity detox. But it's been a delight. No phone. Limited internet. These photos were taken with an Olympus Micro Four Thirds, using physical buttons, manual zoom and focus. It was uploaded via a USB cable, presumably assisted by horse and buggy during limited WiFi availability to bring this dispatch to your door.
My phone has been hobbling on its last legs for weeks. While shoveling snow earlier this week, it must have bent in my pocket just enough to release itself from these earthly perils, and by extension, it relieved me from the quicksand of this sometimes too-connected world. So I'm unavailable until further notice, unless I find WiFi to make posts like this one!
Today I'll honor one of my favorite Uncles who inspired my favorite lines in this song. My Uncle Larry passed away last week and I dedicate my performance to him today. Join us at @whistlestopbar from 5-8pm today!
