We’re delighted to announce that Gráinne Meyer is one of the recipients of a residency at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre - comhghairdeas mór léi. A Belfast-based harpist and composer, Gráinne’s work combines original, improvised and traditional influences. Drawing from a background in both traditional Irish and concert harp, her music interweaves these approaches to create a distinctive sound characterised by “an evolved and multidimensional approach to melody”. In 2023, Gráinne won the World Music Competition at the Wales International Harp Festival with a programme of traditional and contemporary repertoire alongside her own compositions. She has performed and recorded with the Ulster Orchestra and Ulster Consort, and for BBC, RTÉ and TG4. She was also Artist in Residence at the Cairde na Cruite International Harp Festival in 2024 and is currently part of Moving On Music’s Middle Aisle platform for improvising and contemporary musicians. Gráinne’s compositional work is widely performed and broadcast, including commissions from Harp Ireland for harp ensemble and a large-scale collaborative work with Music Generation developed with young musicians through workshops, improvisation and co-creative processes. Alongside her creative work, Gráinne is completing a PhD at Queen’s University Belfast focusing on digital musical instruments and accessible music technologies developed through co-design with disabled musicians. Spring into Summer with The Ulster Consort & Players, and fabulous soloists, in a concert of MOZART of Philip Wilby at The Portico of Ards on Saturday 20 June, 7.30pm. The programme features two works: Mozart’s utterly beguiling Concerto for Flute and Harp - in a delightful chamber version - with the Ulster Orchestra’s Jennifer Sturgeon (flute), Gráinne Meyer (Harp), and Tristan Russcher (piano), followed by a major world premiere, in the presence of the composer: Spring Requiem, by Philip Wilby. This major new work features soloists Charlotte O’Hare (soprano) and Jonathan Brown (baritone). Join us, if you can, in beautiful Portaferry, for this magical evening. Tickets are available at the door or via this link: /ticketbooth/shows/1173677913 #mozart #spring #flute #harp #northernireland

We’re taking part in the Bank of Ideas and we need your vote! Our idea is a series of music and craft sessions with women from the Anaka Collective culminating in an art and music event in East Belfast. These sessions will showcase the incredible artist and musical talent of women across Belfast! Come and support us at the Voting Day in Belfast City Hall on Sunday 10th May. You can call in any time from 2-5pm, with 4-5pm as a quieter hour (there will be no musical performances and lower footfall). You’ll have multiple votes to give out, the decision-making is in your hands as you get to choose which creative ideas will come to life in our city. It’s a family-friendly day out as kids can vote too, there’ll be lots of entertainment as well as the incredible stalls of ideas. No registration need, bring everyone along! #bankofideas2026

Happy International Women’s Day!⁣ ⁣ I discovered recently that only around 14% of tunes documented on thesession.org are written by women. There’s so much incredible music written by women that deserves to be heard and played more often.⁣ ⁣ These two tunes by by Seanna Davey and Bríd Harper are favourites of mine.⁣ ⁣ Susie’s Slip Jig/ Jig for Yvette⁣ ⁣ Here’s a throwback from last year in the Crosskeys for Geantraí.

The first concert of The Ulster Consort’s Season 2026 is nearly upon us - join the female voices of the Consort, Gráinne Meyer (harp), and me on Saturday 17 January (7-8pm) for a delightful programme featuring Benjamin Britten's 'A Ceremony of Carols' - one of the finest works ever written for female voices (as it was originally intended). There are also gems by Rubbra, Hadley, Poston, and Skempton, alongside two world premieres - one by American composer, Gary Davison, and the other by me! Tickets, for this concert in St Colmcilles Parish in East Belfast, are available at the door and in advance via Eventbrite: /e/this-little-babe-tickets-1975544900979 @ulsterconsort @grainne.meyer

Belfast Harp Festival Belfast TradFest | Wednesday 30th July | 7.30pm Tickets via Ticketsolve We are excited to bring the Music Generation Harp Collective to Belfast Tradfest and to perform in Northern Ireland for the very first time. It's a special performance for us as members composed the music being performed under the guidance of local harper/composer Gráinne Meyer. Here is Movt 1, from Lá na Seacht Síon (Day of the Seven Storms / A very stormy day), recorded at Féile na Tána. This movement is titled Soineann go Doineann (Fair to Foul). The suite is a nod to the changeable nature of Ireland's weather, and in particular to Storm Isha, that hit Ireland in January 2024, the day the the music was being composed. The Music Generation Harp Collective is a creative collaboration between harp ensembles from Music Generation Laois, Music Generation Mayo, Music Generation Waterford & Music Generation Louth, and is cofunded by Music Generation / Arts Council & Department of Education & Youth.
