Dearg
Writer/Director Emma Ray brings the story of โAn Dearg Dueโ to the screen for the first time, exploring the darker side of Irish folklore. This period horror short follows a clinician who's called upon to see a lady of a manor who's been overcome with a mystery ailment. What he finds is something beyond comprehension.
Dearg is a well-structured and haunting story which flows effortlessly with purpose and creativity over a runtime of just over 15 minutes. The costume design is excellent, so too is the cinematography. We're dropped into a moment in time from deep in the past and every aspect of the production feels period accurate and in the right place. The casting is great here; every role is purposeful and valuable to the story.
But most of all I loved the colour palette and the lighting design; it's dark yet lit in the right way. So many larger studio films turn the contrast too low to create tension which means we as an audience can't see anything. There's no such issue here; the tones are just as they should be, dark enough to embed the world upon which we're seeing yet allowing us to glimpse at what's to come. Even the name of the short creates a sense of foreboding that is undeniable. The score mirrors the visuals perfectly and is impactful in the right moments. Overall, this is a solid horror short which I'm sure fans of historical films in the genre will need to have on their watchlist.
I'd like to thank Emma for allowing me to exclusively review Dearg ahead of its festival run. Be sure to drop a follow to the tagged accounts to keep up to date on upcoming film festival screenings.

No Mr Hawke you can't have my balloons. Just one of two awesome Grabber cosplayers I found at @ftlohorror last month.
Question is where do your loyalties lie; with the original or sequel? I personally loved the grit of Black Phone and felt Black Phone 2 couldn't decide if it was sequel or prequel.

Today we leave Skeggy for home. It's been a great trip and much needed downtime filled with laughter, childish antics and salty sea air ๐
Definitely didn't take this on a kids ride with the best lighting ๐
Until the next adventure...
And for anyone who's remotely interested in the song choice, I've been wailing this at the top of my lungs all week.
