A poignant long-form essay that weaves together multiple narratives: the workflows of AI-generated text-to-image creation within #midjourney and #stablediffusion, and a reflection on trials and tribulations of the profession and education of an architect. This curated essay by @matsysdesign is a timely discussion on what it means to stay inspired and work productively, imparting nuggets of wisdom for the next generation of designers. Thanks Andrew for the incredible work on this piece, with jaw-dropping images and thoughtful moments of introspection. /articles/diffused-narratives #AI #midjourney #stablediffusion #texttoimage #architecturaleducation #architecturallabor #mediaandarchitecture #visualcrafting

The third and final drop for Gradient Feed #2 is now LIVE! We are excited to launch the Parallel Drop with four new articles featuring work by the Architectural Computational Design and Construction Cluster (ACDCC). Pieces in this feed cover a range of topics, including: Branching Columns: an exploration of genetically-bred parametric algorithms for optimized structural solutions, by Peter von Bülow; The Other Emergence Workers: a photo essay contribution by @vytapivo based on interviews with Lehigh Valley cement workers; Diffused Narrative: a timely critical essay by @matsysdesign on AI generated text-to-image processes using #midjourney and #stablediffusion, woven through reflections from a two-decade long career as a designer and educator; and wrapping up this year’s feed: Postscript, a conversation between @mclainclutter , @tszyan5 , and #rebeccasmith situating broader discursive threads and common themes throughout the INFLECTIONS feed. The eighteen Papers for Feed 2 highlight recent design projects and scholarly publications from the Taubman College community. We want to celebrate the work and achievements from these individuals - notwithstanding the challenges of getting work out in the last two years during the pandemic. The Papers showcased the diversity and breadth of research produced by our faculty, and the Gradient team wants to tip our hats off to them for such stellar work and herein sharing in Gradient! Thanks to the editors this year, @tszyan5 and @itmejono , for pulling together the three drops for INFLECTIONS. A huge thank you to the editorial committee @matisdel.campo , @catienewell , @vytapivo , @jomasan , @kathyvelikov , and Peter von Bülow, and also @mollieclaypool , @mclainclutter , @dcupk , @shelbyedoyle , @matsysdesign , #rebeccasmith, and #achimmenges for their contributions for this year’s Gradient Feed. Shoutout for the support from Chair @mclainclutter , @ireneshwang , @jacobcomerci , and @ishanpal13 . Special thanks to #rebeccasmith for the quick turnarounds but precise edits every single time. #taubmancollege #gradientfeed2inflections #paralleldrop #midjourney #stablediffusion #cementworkers #paragen #postscript

“Akoaki’s Electroform(alism): Masters, Substrates and the Rules of Attraction begins with locally-sourced material - metals harvested from Detroit’s glut of demolition debris - and hybridizes 19th-century plating techniques with digital technology to produce short runs of cheaply mass-produced ornamental tiles.” From the essay, “Tectonic Tiles: Research Through Making Experiments Towards a Critical Contemporaneity,” by Mireille Roddier, live in Gradient 1.0
