Ive spent a considerable amount of time alone and somedays i cant wait for this to end. Recently I had the pleasure of having family over and it showed me something I probably never saw. Why struggle for so long? Why live another day? Why continue at old age? One thing i am grateful for in my time here are the spaces that welcome me, hold me, play with me, inspire me and let me be. How do we use space? how do we embellish emptiness with bits of us and leave a story for someone else to discover. It's funny how it's at this point I felt what it means to be Singaporean? I may not express this correctly but looking at how these individuals were pushed to the fringes or out of the home they felt so important to protect, and despite the ridiculous setbacks, still continued to push back for a fair and just system for all - stirred something in me. Ive never felt like I fit the brand of a Singaporean as its sold by the Govt, obviously it fits the majority but the separation by race and class, thats perpetuated from the top, hasnt really allowed true diversity to flourish. In my mind, we have yet to truly be allowed to create what it means to be 'Singaporean' and not Singaporean Chinese, Indian, Malay, and others. Archaic divide and conquer/Fear tactics have served the ppl in power well, but the rest of us are left with unhealthy competition and alienation, effectively preventing us from rising against. I guess it was thousands and thousands of miles away that I found an energy that wanted to see me as an equal, that allowed a space to question and negotiate my space in the land I was born into. Saying nothing is supporting - i hope that with my privilege of distance, I can find the right things to say.

Advancement depends on Cultural diversity. Much of how far we have come as humans is contributed by the connections we have made across lands and seas. The exchange of lore, trade and mates is what contributed to the many comforts we experience today. Removing 'foreigners' and 'foreign influence' isnt the answer to economic development, many times in history it has shown that isolation brings about detriment and destruction of societies.

Been reading this book (Transcendence) about human evolution. There is a part in there about how we as humans have made it this far and the biggest contributor is our ability to have a community and work as a community for a better tomorrow. And for these communities to be strong, altruism plays a huge part. Cos it builds trust, encourages cooperation and fosters a shared sense of community. Whats also interesting is the cyclical nature of this all: Higher social cohesion creates a more fertile ground for altruism, and in turn, more altruistic acts further strengthen the bonds of the community. So is this competitive individualistic image of success that's sold as an ideal in so many places the most effective way to move forward? Since moving, for me I never realized how important a sense of belonging is to even be motivated to live another day. What do u think machi?

Update: I have come to realize that my video insinuates that brown people are being targeted and hung. My post was about the disproportionate numbers of brown people affected by Singapore’s death penalty. I’m not saying it’s a deliberate targeting, but that it shows a deeper structural issue we need to understand and talk about — why are certain communities more vulnerable to these outcomes?
Pannirselvam was hanged 6am on Wednesday at 38 years old for a crime he did when he was 27. He carried 51.84g of heroin and got caught. Addiction and smuggling isnt something people decide to do if they weren't desperate or didnt have connections to see the options that were available to them. Also they kept this man inside for so long only to end his life. I cant get over how much he has achieved in this time being inside and how that is no value to offering clemency. I cant imagine the number of lives he could have help change and uplift if he was given the opportunity. The tyrant takes another. Hopefully his story and the many others before him will continue to bring people tgt in hope to tip the scales away from the strong stance of the state on death penalty.
