Canticles | Australia Ensemble | World Premiere
In the almost-forty-eight hours since I’ve returned from the Sydney for the world premiere of my new quartet Canticles with the Australia Ensemble, the dust has settled and I’ve realised just how special the experience has been. Brought to life so emphatically by Dave Griffiths, Dimity Hall, Julian Smiles and Timothy Young, the work resonated well beyond my expectations.
Canticles consolidates a move away from the song-like structures of recent works like Altiora Peto and my Easter Mass, but still retains the singing melodies that give them their character. What it seeks is a more architectural approach to the whole, a search for an unbroken thread through its three contrasting movements. It was amazing how the players achieved this: conjuring such depth to the inner slow movement (described to as a spiritual experience by one audience member), set the audience up for their white-hot playing in the finale.
With a few gaps between rehearsals it was also nice to introduce a non-Sydney native to the beaches, the Bridge, and the Opera House. SSO were certainly in fine form for Pertroushka!

What a year we have had!
Remarkable artists from all over the world playing here in our little town.
The year started with the incredible @adelaideferriere who came from France to play here.
It was followed by the wonderful @bachinthedark and the Duo Agostino on the Cello and classical guitar.
In October, the one and only Daniel Röhn returned with the magnificent Olena Nikulina for a remarkable concert filled with sublime playing and Michael Jackson dance moves.
Our last concert for the year was farewelling the incomparable @goldnerstringquartet who were doing their farewell tour after 30yrs of playing together. It was an incredible concert and a wonderful way to see out the year!
We have an amazing program ready for this year and we cannot wait to share Saturday afternoons with you, listening to wonderful music!

“How do you begin, when you know this is the final beginning? How do you play, when you know that to begin this note is to allow the end? How can you listen, when you know you will be hearing the final sound?
Sunday 8th December 2024. The Verbrugghen Hall at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Seventy-nine years to the day and the place where Musica Viva Australia presented its first concert; and now the Goldner Quartet, named after the man who began it all, Richard Goldner, were giving their final performance.
The four players — Dean Olding, Dimity Hall, Irina Morozova, Julian Smiles — chose their perfect end. There was no sense of a diminution of their quality, you would even say the opposite; through the ecstasy of the Goldners’ playing, their humanity and humility were manifest.
Time hovered over the music, the quartet and the audience, trying to delay the un-delayable — the final chord and a sorrow built from thirty years of joy.
A string quartet in its highest form is a bird in flight. It meanders and rises, surges and ambles, dips and swoops. You follow with your ears and your heart and you are taken beyond our earth-bound life.
That is what the Goldner Quartet did, for thirty years.
