Volcano Day! Well, volcano night. These photos were taken at 9-10pm last night (it’s amazing what an iPhone can do in the dark) of the Merapi volcano. It’s more or less always spurting out lava with occasional more dramatic eruptions (the most recent in October 2010 which killed 353 people and forced 350,000 to evacuate). We were viewing from a safe distance. Apparently.

I’ve enjoyed Blazey Best’s work for years, so it was a real pleasure to spend an hour with her talking about acting, auditions, Shakespeare, Fawlty Towers, directing, balancing family life and the theatre, and the tender beauty of 84 Charing Cross Road. She’s funny and thoughtful and it makes for a lovely edition of In Conversation.

🎭 Don’t miss Blazey in 84 Charing Cross Road at The Ensemble Theatre until June 13 – it’s a delightfully heartwarming play that director Mark Kilmurray has done a fantastic job with. Definitely one to see!

The amazing UNESCO listed Borobudur temple in Java. Usually at times like this I’d make a reference to it being in the game Civilization, but it missed out to Angor Wat.

So this happened. I didn't think I'd ever get to spend an hour with the icon who is Suzy Eddie Izzard. And she was as amazing in person as she is on stage and screen. I love her stand up but I also have always loved her acting on TV and film, so am really looking forward to her one person version of Hamlet, coming to the Sydney Opera House 9-21 June.
This is one to listen to, people!

For the second time in a month, I’ve had the chance to spend time with a Broadway legend – though this time in person! Lynn Ahrens is one half of the Ahrens/Flaherty writing team. The team behind Ragtime, Seussical, Once on this Island, and Anastasia, amongst many others.
For someone with multiple Oscar and Tony nominations, plus a Tony win for Ragtime, she was incredibly sweet and modest about her work. And it all started because she was strumming her guitar and making up songs during lunch when she worked as a secretary at an ad agency.

Vale David Malouf AO (1934-2026). I had the great privilege to speak with him on In Conversation in 2022 at the Australian Festival of Chamber Music. He was a true gentleman, speaking modestly about his literary achievements, and offered fascinating thoughts on the evolution of Australia's national identity over his lifetime.

I’ve seen Pamela Rabe on stage so many times it’s impossible to list all the plays, so it was a bit surreal to have one of our finest actresses sit in front of me for an hour. She is so intelligent and passionate about theatre, as well as witty and cheeky on a whole raft of subjects.
Oh… and Wentworth…
She’s originally Canadian but as she’s now lived a lot longer here than there (and she’s now a citizen, complete with Order of Australia) I think we can say she’s one of us.
This is one to listen to (if I say so myself…)

🎭 Catch Pamela in a new adaptation of Ogla Tkarczuk’s Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead at Belvoir Street Theatre until May 10, followed by the leading role of Sister Aloysius in John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt for the Sydney Theatre Company from June 30.
