We’re excited to announce a new series of Kölner Gilding Workshops hosted in partnership with Richard Walker from Watergild Studios (@watergild_studios ), taking place at his studio in Havant this summer - direct train from Waterloo 📅 These hands-on workshops are designed for artists, makers, and gilders looking to develop their skills using a range of Kölner products in a professional studio setting. The Kolner workshops cover the use of Instacoll base, Rapid Stone, Miniatum for paper and flexible gilding, Archicol for textural surfaces, Permacoll acrylic size and Signcoll for lettering and detailed patterns. The Artists workshop covers Archicoll for textured surfaces, Signcoll for detailed patterns and chemical patination techniques. When it comes to water gilding, what lies beneath the gold is just as important as the gold itself ✨ We recently received some fantastic feedback from Exhibit One Studios (@exhibitonestudios ), highly respected experts in traditional water gilding, after using Sinopia Clay Bole in their work. "We’ve recently started using Sinopia bole. Since Selhamin clay bole disappeared from the market we’ve been looking for a replacement that gives the same quality with the burnished finish. Although we tried other bole products nothing gave us the perfect gilded finish that we previously achieved with Selhamin. I believe that Sinopia bole, with its wide range of colours and its effortless burnishing without leaving any scratches, is currently the best bole product available — it’s good to finally have a Selhamin equivalent." Used as the foundation for water gilding, bole plays a crucial role in both the final finish and overall durability of the gild. It enhances warmth, improves adhesion, and is the perfect base for burnishing the gold to a smooth, polished surface that water gilding is known for. ✨ Client Spotlight ✨ Robert Walker (@by_umberto ) was honoured to take part in QEST’s Ultimate Evening of Craft at The V&A, celebrating the incredible work of QEST (Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust), its ambassadors, patrons, and team in supporting craft education and its future. Alongside fellow @qestcraft alumni, Robert displayed and demonstrated his skills and craft, sharing the joy of reverse glass water gilding with guests at this prestigious event. To date, QEST has awarded £7.5 million to nearly 900 makers across the UK in 130 craft disciplines. from guitar making to printmaking, thatching to enamelling. A lil golden one from early last yr. I often feel so fortunate to be doing the job i do, getting to leave behind little hand made sparkles in pretty little places. In this case the sparkles were left on this beautiful curved transom, above the entrance to a beautiful victorian building in Llanduno. Gold leaf isnt always the best choice; in the wrong location it can almost disappear entirely (be it oil or a mirror gild) but in the right place…oh in the right place boy it can shine!
