Be part of the journey from page to stage. Join the Vancouver Bach Choir for a special VOICES free event featuring composer Jeffrey Ryan and his new opera-oratorio Mother/Land, created with librettist Michael MacLennan. The evening will be co-hosted by Vancouver Opera Director of Engagement Ashley Daniel Foot and Vancouver Bach Choir Executive Director Gillian Hunter-Gibbs.
Ahead of its world premiere at the Vancouver Playhouse, Ryan will share insights into the work’s creation, from its musical language to its deeply human story of displacement, love, and community.
The evening includes an open rehearsal of excerpts led by Maestro Leslie Dala, offering a rare, behind-the-scenes glimpse into the artistic process. Experience the music as it comes to life—and connect more deeply with one of the most exciting new Canadian works of the season.

It’s opening night for Vancouver Opera! Myles has been amazing through this whole process. The littlest member of the Children’s Chorus, he has worked so hard ever since preparing for auditions last summer. It’s been a joy to be backstage with this super talented and lovely bunch of kids as their supervisor since the start of rehearsals. Toi, toi, toi to all the wonderful artists and staff who make this La Bohème so beautiful! Happy 9th birthday to my sports mad, singing superstar, wild but wonderful Myles. He loves (and wildly excels at) running and soccer and baseball, and is amazing at art and singing. He is a fireball of energy and drives me nuts on a near daily basis, and is still the best cuddler in the world. Myles, you are so loved and we are endlessly proud of you! Can’t wait to see where life takes this exceptional little boy!

A second of every day of my 2025. A really, really tough year, but in between it all was music, baseball, cats, dance, friends, soccer, sooo many shows and healthy, happy, growing kids. Not sure what this year will bring but I know there will be more of all that which is a very good thing.
