This past weekend was such a beautiful reminder of why I love family, creative family, community, and this wild little life I’ve been blessed with. 🙏🏽 My Lansing loft was full of people all weekend, and I honestly love that… an open door, laughter in every room, music playing, people creating together. One moment I’m out at my family farm in Clare shooting a music video concept with my incredibly talented dance company… the next I’m creating a Drag Brunch scene hanging w/ family and some fierce young queens. 🌈🎬🤠✨ It’s all a little chaotic, heartfelt, colorful, creative, and somehow connected. Gonna leave this right here on #Michaelmovie day. One of the greatest achievements and experiences of my life… performing #BeatIt at my favorite venue, #MadisonSquareGarden, and airing on @cbstv . A moment this group of dancers will cherish forever. 5 fun facts: 1. We had just received our wardrobe and had to create our own looks from what we were given. (I loved mine… I’m the tall blonde one 😅) 2. That pyro explosion at the end? MASSIVE. We didn’t have time to clear it, so we had to drop to the sides and get covered with protective shields. 💥👀 3. During rehearsals, I went into a roundoff back handspring–back handspring… then CRACK… sprained my ankle days before the show. My wardrobe had to hide the brace for every performance. Back then, you didn’t back out. No excuses. 🦴 4. The roar of that audience hit us like a wave… you could feel it in your chest. 💨 5. Before social media and self-tapes, before everything was filmed and posted… there were ROOMS. Rooms for creating moves and rooms for auditioning. With the Michael coming out this Friday, my mind has been going back to my NYC days. I’ll be honest, because of the controversy surrounding Michael Jackson, I’ve sometimes found it difficult to share these experiences. But this moment, for me and for the dancers, is about something much bigger than the show itself. In 2001, I had the opportunity to be part of the casting and rehearsal process for the Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Celebration at @thegarden . I was hired to dance and choreograph, and what I witnessed was a level of pressure, focus, and excellence unlike anything else. But this story isn’t just about me. It’s about the dancers It’s about 25 incredible dancers (TAGGED IN THIS POST) who proved to their families, their friends, and the dance community that if you commit to your training, stay disciplined, fight through the hard moments, trust the process, and never give up on your dream, you can earn your place in the room and have your moment on that stage. It’s also a story about two boys raised in Michigan, living a simple life, believing there was something greater out there for them. They took a chance, moved then met in New York City, both with a common dream, and those dreams led to the opportunity of a lifetime. The audition room at SIR Studios was filled with thousands of dancers from around the world, all chasing one moment. Only 25 moved on. When I spoke with @dancemagazine for a feature during rehearsals, I knew I didn’t want the story to just be about working on this special. These dancers deserved to be seen. They deserved to be remembered. The dancers who booked that job weren’t just talented, and they weren’t just dancing. They were contributing to something iconic.
