After all the blood sweat and tears, our 20 minute film: “The End of SHINBANGUMI” is out today! Part album, part movie, part experiment, part puzzle, I cannot express my gratitude enough to all the friends who helped me pull together this crazy project. I’ve always wanted to make something narrative driven to accompany Ginger Root’s music, and while some might say we did that with the previous EPs, I always felt we could do better, push farther, aim higher. And so David and I took that challenge head on and made, what I believe, is the most ambitious thing we have ever made together. From hot summers filming in Japan, to earthquakes while filming in LA. Ginger Root’s new album, “SHINBANGUMI” is out today. After 4 years since Ginger Root’s last full length record, it feels crazy to finally share this project to the world. A lot had happened since the last album and I wanted to write a set of songs that celebrate how far Ginger Root has come. To write an album that is unapologetically GR. To write songs that displays all facets of the GR sound and its inspirations. While writing this, it’s even crazy to think Ginger Root has its own “sound” now. Wild. The title translates to “new program” or “new show”. From Dutch-angled off-kilter guitars, to lens-flaring synths, I hope everyone can find something to resonate with on this album. Like as if every song were a different show on a tv station. If I’m being honest, the release of this record has been the most mentally exhausting and physically taxing project so far. Maybe we’ll make a documentary about it one day haha. The last 2 EPs will always be a monolith that will probably never be overthrown but on the flip side, I’m glad it invited some of y’all into joining me on this weird musical journey. The season of “SHINBANGUMI” isn’t over, in fact, it’s only just begun. The conclusion to the visual component to the album is still to come. Stay tuned. For those new to the show, “SAIKORO MUSIC” is a series I’m doing inspired by a certain genre of Japanese travel show. Various aspects of the project are determined by the roll of a normal 6-sided die. Keeping the spirit of Toaster Music alive, and inspired by a very specific genre of Japanese travel show, this series follows my journey to make cover songs with certain rules and creative restraints decided by the roll of a normal die. Ginger Root’s going to the movies!! To cap the year off, we are holding an official screening of “SHINBANGUMI: The Movie” at the historic Aratani Theater in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles.
