Ukhty is an ode to sorority. In many Arab cultural homes, emotional reserve is present. We don’t say “I love you” with words, but we show it through gestures. In this short story, I wanted to show the sweetness of sisterhood without any dialogue.
I also realized that clothing can be a true vector of connection. When I think of my sister, I immediately think of those moments when we exchange clothes. There’s a certain beauty in that exchange, as if, through a piece of clothing, we each take a little part of the other and grow closer, even without saying a word.
