Here’s my cover of The Ice Is Getting Thinner by Death Cab For Cutie. It is the final track from the album ‘Narrow Stairs’ released around this date in 2008. Allegedly, as the story goes, the lyrics to this song are printed next to a photo of Chilkoot Pass during the Klondike Gold Rush of the late 19th century. The single file procession traversed the treacherous trade route between Alaska (US) and British Columbia (Canada) of approx 1500 man made steps that were too narrow for more than one person at a time; it came to be known as the ‘Golden Stairs’ and speculatively was the inspiration for the album title. Unfortunately, many men and horses alike died along the way… but they built up with their bare hands what we still can’t do today

Death Cab For Cutie earns its ninth No. 1 hit on Adult Alternative Airplay this week with “Riptides”! 📈🌊
The band last topped the chart in 2023 with “Pepper” and first led the list in 2005 with “Soul Meets Body.”
To the surprise of no one, the artist I streamed most on Spotify was Death Cab. Over 17,000 minutes of Death Cab to be exact. Which means I’ve spent almost 2 full weeks of my life listening to them. And that’s *just* streaming. I listen to Transatlanticism & Plans in my car on CD most of the time. Yes, my old, busted car has a CD player.
Here’s something I’ve never told anyone, and it’s a little sad. It started in 2023 when my cat Sammy died. I turned my car on and the cd I had in was Plans. “Marching Bands of Manhattan,” came on and hit me so hard. I just sat there in my car sobbing, letting myself get immersed in it. I’ve lost 2 of my beloved cats since then and each time I do the same thing. That song is this little catcher’s mitt that takes my sorrow. It doesn’t fix it, it just holds it, and it sits with me.
Transatlanticism is my all time favorite album, and seeing it played front to back twice was so incredible.
TLDR; I love Death Cab for Cutie and I can’t wait to see them again in July 💗

Just got back from a packed couple of days at the Non-Comm music radio conference in Philly. So much great conversation and an incredible lineup of showcases, shown here are Death Cab For Cutie, Molly Tuttle, Ryan Bingham, Friko, The Hooters, Bebe Stockwell, Arlo Parks, Cardinals, Rhiannon Giddens, Mon Rôvia, Kevin Morby, Tyler Ballgame, Blessing Jolie, Stephen Wilson Jr, Weird Nightmare, Medium Build, and a really cool album playback and performance by Brandon Flowers. Big props to friends at host station @wxpnfm for pulling this huge effort off so meaningfully.
