Listening Session “Taxi Driver Sounds” with Abd
Abds session is to honor the Taxi Driver’s Ear. Taxis circle, always in motion. There in the taxi, we listen—to be carried elsewhere, that temporality of the everyday. Listening in the taxi it is like a sonic debt, you owe the unknown something.
In the early morning, the radio buzzes. At noon, sellers call out. In the afternoon, the cassette plays. Evening brings the Mawal, and at night, Tarab stretches time.
There’s no satisfaction here. The driver switches between radio channels, catching a signal, return to cassettes, CDs, and USBs, Bluetooth connections—practices kept, media transformed. A world of shared, informal economies of sound, pirated and passed hand to hand. The taxi overflows with sounds; the outside has another tempo. Windows down, everything mixes together. The taxi driver shares, the passenger embrace. protocols unwritten—signals exchanged, a shift in volume. We’ll start at Ataba, Mawal, Shaabi, Tarab, and pop, also into the street’s sounds.
We’ll listen like the taxi driver does.
