Ghetto Concept dropping a new album is seismic news for hip-hop because it resurrects one of Toronto’s foundational crews—pioneers who helpedput Canadian rap on the map in the mid-’90s with raw, unfiltered street narratives that rivaled anything coming out of New York. Their 1995 single “EZ on da Motion” remains a North American underground anthem that influenced a generation. In an era where labels like Mass Appeal have successfully revived ’90s legends (Raekwon, Mobb Deep, Big L, Slick Rick), a fresh Ghetto Concept record isn’t just nostalgia—it’s a bridge between boom-bap’s golden age and today’s globalized sound, proving that T-dot’s original kings still reign.
New Ghetto Concept, with new Choclair coming, Dan-e-o out last year, Maestro Fresh Wes, Saukrates, Kardinal and Mathematik still making gold, it's a good time for us Rap Essential era fans.
The youth of the South Bronx, growing up in an environment of poverty and devastation, found innovative ways to express themselves.
Without access to traditional arts or recreational spaces, they built a grassroots cultural movement that would later be known as Hip-Hop.

A follow-up to our recent Ghetto Concept/ CBC news post, here is the group performing Ez on da Motion on RapCity. Not that it really matters to anyone else, I am sure, but I do want to say that this song is #1 on my Canadian rankings, and I got it right up there with 93 till Infinity, T.R.O.Y., Mass Appeal, Shook Ones, and a few others for favorite track overall!
Also, it's amazing how iconic that font and graphics @forcemg used for RapCity. Get that rush of nostalgia whenever I see it.
With the news that we are hoping to make a Bag of Trix doc with Maestro Fresh Wes as EP, help me out... What's a good Ghetto Concept song to use for a breaking documentary? (NOT EZ on da Motion. Used it in Drop the Needle, looking for something different)
CBC segment on Ghetto Concept's Juno Win
You will recognize bits and pieces of this segment from Drop the Needle (on Amazon Prime & on DVD/Blu-Ray) but here is the complete version featuring the legendary Hip Hop group.
Ghetto Concept is a pioneering Canadian hip hop group from Toronto, formed in the early 1990s by Kwajo Cinqo and Dolo, later joined by Infinite. Known for their smooth, jazz-influenced beats and laid-back lyrical delivery, the group helped shape the sound of Toronto hip hop in the decade’s golden era. Their debut single Certified (1993) won a Juno Award for Best Rap Recording, followed by another Juno in 1995 for E-Z On Tha Motion, solidifying their influence in Canada’s urban music scene. With a style rooted in storytelling, street consciousness, and soulful production, Ghetto Concept played a key role in bringing national attention to Toronto’s hip hop culture and inspiring a generation of Canadian artists.
🚨 PICK A SIDE! 🚨

The Art Gallery of Ontario & Roots Rhymes Collective are celebrating the legacy of MuchMusic’s RapCity. On Saturday, March 22nd, RapCity creator/producer Michele Geister will join Master T, Basil C. Young and Nam Kiwanuka for an in-depth look back at the iconic show.
RapCity certainly had an impact on me growing up, living outside of a major city and having next to zero access to the genres of music I personally enjoyed. A show like RapCity was a lifeline for those, like myself, who didn't want a strict diet of Top 40 and Rock. The only place for people who wanted to see and hear music such as Ghetto Concept's EZ on da Motion.
That impact motivated me to include RapCity as one of the important topics we discussed during our documentary Drop the Needle.
