Meet Nuhu Muhammed - who I covered last year on an assignment for @unicef_nigeria @unicef @unicefafrica Years ago, registering his children’s births was a struggle; the process was complicated and disorganized. Some of his kids never got registered. Still, he didn’t give up. “I gave the ones I could register their birth certificates on their wedding day,” he says, “so they’d know to do better for their children.” Frames 6 & 7: Nuhu improvised. He kept wrriten records of all their birth dates. Now, with easier systems in place, Nuhu is seen (in the fist and second frame) taking his daughter, Abida, 7, to a registration center to register her birth. I’d intentionally postponed my NYSC by a year so I could stay back and learn a thing or two; so I stayed back in school; OAU. I was a frustrated and confused front-end web developer battling with impostor syndrome. Then came 2015, I was living with my very good friend, @westedgevisuals , who at the time was a self-taught photographer and cinematographer. I picked interest in photography a little and even though I knew next to almost nothing, he trusted I was smart enough; gave me some foundational photography knowledge and will send me for jobs: weddings, intros, other events, etc. The first ever wedding or event I covered for him was his Elder Sister’s wedding 😂 - I was the offical photographer and I been no sabi “shingbayin”… (Didn’t know jack) I shot the wedding on full auto (@westedgevisuals would also later give me some foundational teachings on how to shoot on manual); and I was just blasting speedlight everywhere; yet, I was excited about the “snapping”. The next wedding I shot was a disaster but then I didn’t know. Couple of years after I shot it, I was checking old files, appreciating my journey, then I saw the images from that wedding. I felt very bad that I went to aooglize to the couple. Fast forward to 2017, I’d in-between that, taken some photography break and came back and then I attended the first edition of the @abujaphotofest , and boom; my mind open and shifted and till date I haven’t recovered from the insights gotten. It’s the #worldphotographyday , and I’m grateful for my imperfect journey.

He was not merely born; he was captured by fate itself—an aperture opened, the light poured in, and the world gained not a subject, but a storyteller. With every shutter click, he distills emotion, arrests time, and transforms fleeting glimpses into eternal truths. His lens does not just see—it knows; it listens to silence, it catches laughter mid-flight, it finds grace in the unnoticed. And now, as another year is exposed, developed, and added to the reel of a life well-seen, we do not mark age—we celebrate vision. So here’s to the man behind the camera: may your focus remain sharp, your shadows well balanced, and your every tomorrow lit by the golden hour of destiny.
