Today, ‘Three Rooms’ writer Jo Hamya releases her newest novel,
‘The Hypocrite, from
@pantheonbooks . The story follows the tense family dynamics of a disgraced novelist who attends his daughters’ play, unbeknownst to the fact that the plot is based on a Sicilian vacation the two took a decade prior, filled with not-so-subtle criticisms on him and his generation.
On the beginnings of the novel, Hamya says. “I got this strange vision of a man watching a play about his life. And knowing that this play was going to be utterly and completely false to him-just so unrepresentative of how he saw himself as a person and unrepresentative of his memories-that maybe the events corresponded, but the meaning of the events would be completely different.”
