Cave diver Sam Johnson enjoys Cow Springs in Luraville, Florida after a dive with buddies. Cow is a site owned by the Cave Diving Section of the National Speleological Society in north Florida, near the Suwannee River. A beautiful place to be for Earth Day, or pretty much any day.

I’ve admittedly not been in the water much lately because of frustration with trim and buoyancy in the drysuit. I was feeling super great in my wetsuit so starting back at square one with a different suit was super discouraging. Told myself to woman up and get back in the water, keep making adjustments just like I did to perfect the wetsuit, then dive my ass off to get ready for Full Cave this spring. Drysuit and linework you’re going down! (Respectfully)

We lost another great guy this week. Darrell was our Special Effects supervisor on The Walking Dead for all the seasons. He handled all the explosions, fires, and gun fire effects. He worked on tons of films and he was a Vietnam vet, which he never really talked about. I was told he was a special forces guy, so I can only imagine the stories and experiences he had. For me, he was the best. I would ask him where was the safe place for me to be for any explosion, and he knew exactly where it was. And because he knew I was also a vet and former photojournalist, (and a bit off like him and most other crew members), he would usually put me right in the front line, closest to the explosion, so I could get the best shot. Which I enjoyed and appreciated. He was a true pro and the nicest fellow. He passed away on Dec. 19th. These photos capture ten seasons on set with him in Georgia. We’ll miss you Darrell....

A blast from the past —this shot was taken on the set of the first Jeepers Creepers movie in Dunnellon, Florida during the first week of filming in August, 2000. Gina Philips and Justin Long play brother and sister Trish and Darry, in the car on the left, while Jonathan Breck, who portrayed the creeper in the first three films, is in his well-known truck.
This was the only week of days we had on this almost two months of shooting in north central Florida. While the rest were night shoots. I was lucky to get on this film because another still photographer passed on it due to all the night work. I went on to work on the second Jeepers film in California two years later.
To get this shot, a producer had to give up his coveted seat on the process trailer, as there’s only a limited number of people allowed. This was a very fun shoot to be on!

A film/television production crew is a large number of artists and technicians gathered together on set, working in all kinds of weather and all hours of the day and night, making what producers and studios hope will be a money making, profitable venture. Time is money and usually a lot of it is being spent.
Crews sport a wide range of personalities and job titles, with creativity and endurance being high on the list.
In my 30 plus years in this business, I’ve only had one “job” that lasted for multiple years/seasons, and that was AMC Television’s The Walking Dead. It was a blessing to be with a lot of the same crew for most of those years, including the show’s script supervisor Amy Lacy. She helped make sure actors and action that ended up on screen was done correctly and matched.
I first met Amy in 1996 at Universal Orlando while shooting stills on the show SeaQuest. And she was there with her happy energy and sense of humor day after day through all those Walking Dead seasons, all the time helping make sure that the show was the best it could be. And while raising three children!
It’s hard to try to understand at times like this how the very unfortunate actions of others can take someone like Amy away from us. And the fact that we won’t see her beautiful face on set, except in our memories, which are precious to us.

Here are two Hilltop set photos with Kelley Mack, who played Addy in seasons nine through 11 on The Walking Dead. She was a pleasure to work with and be around on set. Kelley passed away this week at 33.
On her first day on set, the scene called for her and two others to meet Henry, played by Matt Lintz.
The first shot was being done by the film camera on a technocrane, so no place for me to hide or be out of shot. The cast did the whole scene just for me, as you see Kelley shaking Matt’s hand. Otherwise, there would have been no way for me to photograph that. Love working with caring, professional artists, and we lost one this week.

He’s shown here with Gary Mace while shooting for their TV show Treasure Divers.
We’ll miss Capt. Fizz. He was truly one of a kind.
