This is Gemma Holzer
@gemma.holzer
Gemma is a visual artist currently based in London. Her work mixes personal nostalgia and reimagined histories, featuring strange creatures inhabiting nondescript spaces and alluding to artefacts involved in funerary practices, vessels that hold long forgotten memories.
Drawing inspiration from standing stones and Neolithic sites, she brings ancient imagery into contrast with newly manufactured representations, pulling past and present together. In her cut-out paintings, isolated figures are suspended by chains within steel frameworks, exploring physical discomfort, emotional strain, and disconnection. Like the relics they reference, their stories remain unknown.

Recently I’ve been interested in the act of obscuring; picking and choosing what remains visible and what is hidden. I do this through the application of transparent and opaque paint, but also through the layering of materials.
The piece above is made using one of the many offcuts I kept from my time @rca_painting@royalcollegeofart
One in a series of smaller shapes that are taking form while new colours make their way into my palette 🍂🌳🍁🥀🌻
