Nickerson Gardens was Granny’s last residence before she moved to our current block in Mid-city Los Angeles. The idea of naming such spaces “gardens” carries such irony, not only for my family, but for the existence of the environment itself, too. My mother recalls seeing armed guards push past her front door during the Watts Riots of 1965. After leaving my grandfather, this was Granny’s first place of stability as a single mother of seven. Some embraced that peace, and some were led down other paths. Either way, 112th Street was transformative in various ways for our family.

Summer is coming to a close, and there’s so much to do! For those of you who don’t know, I have been a high school teacher for many years, creating and exploring with youth who have learning disabilities and social/emotional challenges. Working with adolescents has helped me to learn so much about resilience, my own creative sensibilities, and how we identify our purpose.
