Tonight is the opening of the “Irish Contemporaries (V)” exhibition at @18thstreetarts in Santa Monica, Los Angeles. My time as a resident there this past April was incredible, and I’m really excited to be part of this show. Come along if your in the area to see a fantastic collection of Irish art. A huge thank you to @ciac.la for facilitating the residency and exhibition.

🇮🇪✨ THE IRISH CONTEMPORARIES {V} — ARTIST SPOTLIGHT ✨🇺🇸
Gearoid O Dea (@gearoidodea ) will exhibit work at @18thstreetarts and @angelsgateart
Join us for our two openings:
📍 Santa Monica - @18thstreetarts - Opens Friday May 15th at 6pm
📍 San Pedro - @angelsgateart - Opens Saturday May 16th at 1pm
Gearoid O’Dea is a Dublin-based artist whose practice centres on painting and drawing, often extending into installation. His work is characterised by a vibrant palette and a collage-inspired approach to composition. He is particularly interested in the human figure, using it as a vehicle to explore the quiet undercurrents of an OCD anxiety disorder. During his residency with Ciacla/18th Street Arts Center in Los Angeles, Gearóid will further develop these themes while engaging with a new artistic context and community. Gearóid completed an MFA at the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) in 2013.

‘Gardener not Architect’ is available as a print edition. It is sized at 40 x 50 cm. Each print is an edition of 30 and is produced using archival pigments on cotton rag. They are signed and numbered.
The piece aims to explore the tension between planning and organic exploration in the creation of artwork, with watercolour representing a looser flow, while wax pencil acts as the underlying skeleton of the image.
The model of the work being @ellenduffy_va an amazing Irish artist. Link in Bio.
A behind the scenes look at the making of a recent piece ‘Internal Churn’… it was a labour of love but really enjoyed the process.
Great to exhibit at the @artriddler show and see it sold to a lovely collector.
Watercolour with wax colouring pencil on paper.

🎨 Ever heard of a basic income… for artists?
🇮🇪 Turns out, Ireland has been testing it out since 2022, and it seems to be keen to continue with its pioneering program.
🧑🎨 For the past three years, 2,000 painters, musicians, actors, writers and more have been participating in a pilot run of the Basic Income for the Arts scheme. We spoke to one of them, Dublin-based visual artist Géaroid O’Dea, who told us how this income changed his life, and his art.
🤳 You can check out all his work @gearoidodea
🙄 What do you think about this program? Would you want your country to introduce something similar?
