"Variazione di segno" a print portfolio by @matissemesnil Public release: 📍 Gate 44 Gallery Milano 🗓 19.05.2026 h. 7 p.m. Gate 44 is pleased to announce the public release of Variazione di segno, presented during the finissage "SUTURA" solo exhibition by @matissemesnil in collaboration with @romeropaprocki . Variazione di segno is a suite of 5 drypoint prints on Hahnemühle Natural White 350 gsm paper presented in a handmade case clad with Japanese Takeo Satogami Charcoal in an edition of 11 copies. Each case features a recessed metal plate engraved by the artist and inked, making every piece unique. The work stands at the intersection of Mesnil’s practice of working on metal and printmaking. The plates were produced by the artist using blacksmith tools and printed by the master printer @gianluca.craca The series explores the subtle variations of the engraved trace through printing solutions that enhance the slightest differences in the surface, generating visual outcomes suspended between presence and erasure. #gate44 #printmaking #contemporaryart #fineartprinting #artedition #etching

“Vedute miopi” by Matisse Mesnil @matissemesnil Monotype on Hahnemühle paper, natural white 350 gsm - 124 × 170 cm - 2026 The series includes 11 monotypes and is part of SUTURA, the solo exhibition organised by Gate and @romeropaprocki , on view until 19.05.2026. All the works in the exhibition were produced during the artist’s residency at Gate 44, in close exchange with the workshop’s technical team. The residency’s approach to experimentation allowed the artist to expand his visual language and technical toolkit, shaping the works on view. Gate44 has the pleasure to announce the selected artist of the Open Call "Printmaking Residency" is Irene Fenara @bibifenara Irene Fenara (b. 1990) is an Italian artist whose research explores the aesthetics and politics of machine vision. Her work engages with surveillance systems, visual errors, and the thresholds of perception, reconfiguring technological imagery into poetic and ambiguous forms. Through video installations, large-scale prints, and subtle performative gestures, Fenara questions the presumed neutrality of automated observation, revealing its fragility and potential for reinterpretation. This occasion also marked the inauguration of Gate 44’s new exhibition space in collaboration with Romero Paprocki Gallery @romeropaprocki . More pictures soon. Venezia, Milano The exhibition brings together a wide range of works, from “drawings” on iron and inox plaques to large-scale works on paper and site-specific installations. Developed during an intensive six-month residency, "Sutura" reflects Mesnil’s exploration of key elements and recurring themes within his practice, while simultaneously engaging with unfamiliar supports and image-making processes. Each stage of the process, from initial intuitions to the technical definition of each work, was shaped by a continuous exchange between the artist and the artisans, culminating in the artworks presented in the exhibition. Born in 1989, Matisse Mesnil is an Italian-French artist based in Paris.
