these pix are from the philly to pittsburgh to lancaster to philly to portland leg of the trip. special thanks to @paigehenry6010 and @edparrishjr for putting together an awesome workshop, @ferrous_sculpt for the place to crash, and to everyone else who was at @riversofsteel #festivalofcombustion, y’all rock.
some behind the scenes of making ‘overlooked the puddles’. the project took A LOT of time and a lot of steps:
1. sculpt figure in clay
2. make rubber mold
3. cast wax version of the figure
4. roughly cut wax into pieces that could be drafted to pull from a two part mold
5. mold and cast in aluminum
6. fit pieces back together: sand, shape, “machine”
7. mold finished patterns and cast aluminum matchplates
8. mold and cast final sculpture
in between all these steps there was also a lot of thinking….how, why, will this work or will that be better??? the finished sculpture is cast in 4 green sand molds: 1 loose pattern for the umbrella, 1 matchplate for both feet, and 2 matchplates for the jacket. the plate underneath the umbrella and the base it stands are laser cut. the umbrella handle is brass rod and all the pieces bolt together with brass hardware.

Late to the party with this post but back in early spring I went to Memphis for the first time, and attended @phyreforge ‘s collaborative sculpture class at the @metalmuseum
Honoured to have spent this time with such an incredible group of talented people!
Special thanks to MAK @nettlefireforge and GARY @gary_perk for hosting me in their lovely abode
