Lark - Smartest. The Offshore Remix. Cover artwork by @gary.spratt71 For Ewan Robertson the brilliant musician and person who was Offshore and an ex-member of Lark. An album of Lark vs Offshore material is out later this year. Thanks to @ninjatune @jennie_hancock @rssmct for helping this happen. Thanks to @gary.spratt71 for the cover artwork and @galpin.paul for mixing and mastering. This is the 4th remix after ones by @koemner and @philip_diprose The original version of The Smartest Cunt is on the first Lark record ‘Shop’ on @care_in_the_community_rec For limited editions, DLs, Vinyls or CDs message me or go to Lark - Some Press. @uncut_magazine - ‘The wonky unsettling world it creates is very much Bielik’s own’ @thequietus - ‘That rare breed of band that creates and inhibits an environment entirely of their own making’ @louderthanwarofficial - ‘One of the albums of the year... one of the most exciting albums around’ @roughtradeeast - ‘Fantastic, sounds like a drunken, dense and dark take on a stooges riff mixed with the repetition of The Fall’ @loudandquietmag - ‘Jerky beats, repetition, strangely cryptic lyrics, wiry guitars and manic psycho-bluesy vocals’ Lark is an independent London band fronted by founder Karl Bielik, a nonconformist and often idiosyncratic songwriter and artist described by @clashmagazine as “a singular voice.” Lark carves a grimy, gritty groove. Heavy basslines, raucous sounds and turbulent lyricism paint a volatile picture of the landscape they inhabit. Romantic, dissonant, feverish and alive, Lark is an unsound sound.

Stoborough Heath looking north across the western edge of Poole harbour, Beacon Hill in the distance opposite and mirroring Creech Barrow which from this viewpoint is directly behind me, I’m on a pretty straight crow flying line between the two. The second oil sketch from that day. Oil on prepared paper, 14.5 x 23.5 cms #contemporarybritishpainting #modernpainting #oilsketch #landscapepaintingnow #pleinairpainting

A day on the heath again this week. An oil sketch (detail, swipe for the whole picture) on prepared paper, Creech Hill Barrow in the distance. This one is the first of two sketches done that morning, I’ll post the other one another time. Also a larger canvas in the afternoon. Was a lot to do, and a struggle, but it always is. Heard the cuckoo this week, 22nd of April, while painting these sketches. Think that’s the earliest I’ve ever heard it. Out on the Purbeck heaths again, sunny but a strong east wind and I’m sheltering behind gorse bushes, which in Dorset we call fuzz, or furze. I prepared a lot of watercolour paper with some reddish clay found in the cliffs, mixed in varying degrees with natural chalk and ground up handmade (by my son) charcoal, then sealed with size, to make a ground for oil painting. Michael Harding paint is new to me, I’ve just received a selection of mostly earth colours, with warm and cool white. So a limited palette here was the thing. I’m not entirely sure why exactly. Something about being more inventive. Thinking of the poem, What is the language using us for? by Sidney Graham, and Sam Beckett writing in French. To force change by placing a restriction, and to question the means. It’s not exactly radical, but it is something. “Habit is a great deadener” Beckett in my ear again. #cuckoo #landscapepaintingnow #modernbritishart #contemporarybritishpainting #oilsketch

This painting was done over about a weeks worth of mornings. A holiday week at home (not being one for actual going away type holidays) with family come to stay, and so some hours to spend in the studio, while everyone else is making elaborate breakfasts and deciding what we might do that day. The light in the studio is good in that there’s a lot of it and it’s fairly consistent. But it is bright, and everywhere, and lacks the kind of pathways of light and dark that you find in a room in a home. Unusual for me to paint in the morning like this, and in consecutive sessions over several days. A limited palette of mostly earth colours, with a little cobalt blue being the exception. A large green vase amidst the cuboid structures of books, shelves, a table, a box of paintings, and the TV, that all nestle together in a corner of our front room. Propped on the shelf at the top is a postcard from the Cecily Brown show, a gift from one of my kids when they and their partner came down from Sheffield, via London and the Serpentine, to visit for the Easter holiday.
