When we were designing Thracian Cliffs and standing on the edge of the Black Sea, the waves were crashing relentlessly against the rock below. It seemed like every hole would dare you to pause, breathe and respect the power of nature. Much like Pebble Beach or Cypress Point, this course does not merely sit beside the water, it dances alongside, demanding courage, imagination and humility in equal measure. Beauty in golf is not only about scenery, but rather it is about how the land stirs your soul and sharpens your senses. Thracian Cliffs does exactly that, and in its own bold, untamed way. GP
A full life is a gift. A career in golf is a privilege. Having my story told is a humbling honour. My heart is full—full of gratitude for those who brought this documentary to life and full of love for the people who made the journey so extraordinary.
You start out just wanting to win that first tournament. Then one day, you look back and realize the journey of a champion became something far greater than trophies or titles.
This is my story… of how a young boy from Africa dared to conquer the world.
I have always considered myself a student of the game. That doesn’t just mean working on the swing but examining the accomplishments of my fellow professional golfers and how they overcame adversity on their way to certain triumphs. What was the turning point on their way to claiming status as a Major champion? I spent more than a year uncovering those indistinguishable moments from Augusta to St. Andrews and I hope you will enjoy learning about how these champions achieved greatness. The first time major championship golf came to @aroniminkgolfclub , history was made! In 1962, @gary.player became the first international player to win the @pgachampionship in the stroke-play era.
I fortuitously missed the cut at the Open in 1962 as it humbled me and allowed me to head to Aronimink with a new hunger to bounce back. It was a pleasure competing with my friend Bob Goalby. A special memory.
I am blessed to have been a PGA Champion at Aronimink in a city and place that I enjoy so much. I hope it is a great week for all involved.
It’s an honour to be part of the President’s Council on Sports, Fittness and Nutrition. I’ve dedicated nearly my entire life to be an advocate for this type of initiative and we will be doing more to encourage young people to maintain fitness and a healthy lifestyle. The youth of a nation are the trustees of posterity! GP
