Crafty Play, a discussion with artists Lorna Brown, Garnet Hertz and Christian Huizenga around the subversive potential of craft and hand-making. Wed Oct 22, 5:00-6:30 with a pre-discussion learn-to-knit workshop from 4:00 and post-discussion reception, all at Green College Coach House. Bring your own in-progress handicrafts to work on during the discussion. Seasons of Play lecture series Play is a defining characteristic of human nature -it acts as a means to connect, a method of subversion, a way to teach and communicate, a space for exploration and imagination, and a place to use our senses and connect with the world in an embodied way. This Green College Leading Scholars series engages with play as a critical practice across time, place, and space, asking the fundamental question: how can play help us learn, think, and teach? We orient our conversations through the cyclicity of the seasons, grounded in Indigenous understandings of wise practices. Seasons of Play is fundamentally experiential and embodied, incorporating opportunities for active participation in each session. @germkoh @garnethertz @studio.huizenga @lorna.doone.brown

Cockroach Controlled Mobile Robot 3 is an experimental robotic system that uses a live insect as the controller (or driver) of a three-wheeled robot. It has toured the world, and this segment is from the documentary "Art Loves Technology" (2006) shot and produced by Jane Snijders. Filmed at the former Philips Strijp-S factory site (Klokgebouw) at the STRP Festival in Eindhoven, Netherlands.

Part of the reason I find mechanisms and stuff with wheels interesting is that my Dad built experimental fuel-efficient vehicles when I was a kid - he broke six consecutive world records. This video (with his vehicles) was at Expo '86. It taught me a lesson in that farm kids from Saskatchewan could build hacksawed and hand built DIY projects onto the world stage, and that designing and building stuff from scratch was interesting and fun. He's the guy in the lab coat with a stopwatch.

The time in 2001 when the Saskatchewan government featured me in a campaign to promote not leaving Saskatchewan - along with Andrea Menard and Dean Fleck. It was a relatively large campaign with billboards and print distribution. I was "President of one of Canada's premier web production studios" circa Y2K and was trying to sell my company (Vividworks) under an IPO. I wanted to make a ton of money and retire before I turned 30 and make art projects. We had VC funding and had built a search engine (Typengo) and a fully functional ATM-ish music kiosk system that burned custom audio CDs for $0.99/track in a couple of minutes - we were going to be the future.

Fingerprint Gallery is thrilled to announce the opening of a groundbreaking project, “How to Appreciate Graffiti: The Exhibition”. This initiative follows the historic launch of a course dedicated to the interpretation and appreciation of graffiti art, a first of its kind at Emily Carr University. This project is led by Canada Research Chair Dr. Garnet Hertz, along with “Vancouver’s favourite graffiti artist” Smokey Devil as a resident guest artist and community liaison. Graffiti, the controversial and vibrant art form that transforms urban landscapes into canvases of expression, serves not only as a medium of identity but also as a critical commentary on society. Graffiti represents a clash of perceptions: viewed by some as a destructive element in public spaces, yet celebrated by others as a critical, unsanctioned facet of urban visual culture. The course, conceived by Dr. Hertz, aimed to delve into the depths of graffiti’s cultural, historical, and societal significance, spotlighting its undeniable impact on urban cultural identity and visual dialogue. Due to its uniqueness, this course has been written about in The National Post, The Province, The Vancouver Sun, and featured on CBC Television and CBC Radio-Canada. The exhibition is a testament to this pedagogical journey of discovery. It showcases a hand-produced zine titled “How to Appreciate Graffiti” developed by the students as their final project, encapsulating their insights and reflections over the last semester. The exhibition also features contributions from the esteemed guest graffiti artists who have lectured over the semester, sharing their invaluable knowledge and perspectives with the students. This distinguished lineup includes Smokey Devil, the Juno-award-winning Dedos, Zense, Gurl 23, Grow Up, and Phantom. Join us at Fingerprint Gallery, located at 663 Market Hill, nestled near the scenic Olympic Village Station on False Creek. The exhibition kicks off with an opening night on Friday, April 5th at 6pm and runs until April 12th. #graffiti #vancouvergraffiti #vancouvergraffitiart #canadiangraffiti #dtes #vancouver #smokeydevil #emilycarr #news #globalbc @fingerprint_gallery
