You know this feeling.
Choreographed and directed by Or Schraiber and Bobbi Jene Smith, with piano accompaniment by Yonatan Daskal, the film “Waiting Places” takes its cue from the emotions and movements that erupt when we find ourselves stuck—mentally or physically—in a state of limbo. “It’s so much about longing,” Smith says of the film’s transfixing choreography. “And desire, distraction, anxiety, humor ....”
What are these three women waiting for? You could theorize below in the comments…or, better yet, make a break for it at the link in bio. “Waiting Places,” featuring Smith, along with dancers Astrid Elbo and Kizzy Matiakis, is free to stream right this very second (and 24/7) on our website. ♾️ AllArts.org/Past-Present-Future.

Danielle, my life was more vivid because of you. I lived and loved bigger because of you. I’ll miss you for the rest of my days.
You were always cosmic; now it’s just official. A firebird soaring through the night, kaftan flowing, capri between your fingers, house music thumping, fully connected to the universe. You’re free. I love you honey.
__________
Now they’ll walk on my arm through the distant night, And I won’t let them stray from my heart. Through the wind, through the dark, through the winter light, I will read all their dreams to the stars. I’ll walk now with them. I’ll call on their names. And I’ll see their thoughts are known Not gone, Not gone. They walk with my heart, And I’ll never let them go. I’ll never let them go. I’ll never let them go.

Happy 40th birthday to my absolute ace boom boom firefly cosmic girl @danie11ey
I met you 22 years ago in a ballet school dormitory kitchen, and I knew I loved you immediately. You were the girl with a style all your own, never influenced by a trend or fad - just 100% You. A true original. Impossibly chic, wildly independent, and full of life.
Watching you dance was always a joy — quick-fire footwork, elegant épaulement, and movement that stretched wide and full of breath. You didn’t just jump; you flew. You’d reach the top of a jump, and just when it seemed you couldn’t go any higher - you did. In those moments, you transcended through space and time. It looked like the best feeling in the world. It made me feel like I could fly, too.
We’ve had so many beautiful chapters together. Here’s to this one, Dan. I love you so much. No matter what time gives us, I’ll carry you with me - always - dancing, flying, laughing, and leaping through the stars together.

In Jack Ferver’s My Town, the American small town is a portal that provides special access into questions of self-expression and collective agency. Set between an area of upstate New York and Wisconsin, My Town considers the queer experience outside urban metropoles, and the ways physical geography marks the interior terrains of the mind.
Ferver has described the project as “exploring the disappearance of the femme,” taking a queer departure from the classic American play Our Town by Thornton Wilder.
Ferver’s arsenal of theatrical spectacle, exacting choreography, wild humor, and raw emotion- weave through the tragicomic work of violence, sexuality, mystery, and shaky reconciliation. The dreamlike fluidity and startling jumps of the work are framed and echoed in the video and score by acclaimed filmmaker and artist Jeremy Jacob.
My Town by Jack Ferver was commissioned by EMPAC / Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY and Jack H. Skirball Center for the Performing Arts at New York University (@nyuskirball ) where the work will have its NYC premiere in the Fall.
Written, choreographed, performed by Jack Ferver

♾️ The agony of waiting – made mesmerizing.
Starting tonight, stream “Waiting Places,” a dance film inspired by the movements we make when time seemingly stands still.
Choreographed and directed by Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber, and produced by Garen Scribner, the film revolves around five people, each waiting for something — a phone call? A person? Their desires and emotions differ, yet all are reckoning with time. “Waiting is actually a very active thing,” Smith says of the film. “...How do you distract yourself, and how are you actually in the living while you wait?”
♾️Featuring performances by Smith and Schraiber, alongside @theroyaldanishballet.dancers Astrid Elbo, Alexander Bozinoff and Kizzy Matiakis.
♾️ Presented in our #PastPresentFuture dance film festival.

Talk about foreshadowing, @paultazewell . 😭
This interview took place in 2019, when “Wicked” costume designer Paul Tazewell was nominated for a Tony Award for his work on Broadway’s “Ain’t Too Proud.” At the time, Tazewell reflected on how he got his start on his high school production of “The Wiz,” plus shared his hopes for the future.
“I feel so very fortunate and want to stay in a mind space of openness and hopefully drawing other opportunities in,” said Tazewell, who is now the first Black man to win an Oscar for costume design. “And also being true to the work. Doing really excellent work, I hope.”
