Happy Birthday to Virginia Hamilton! Born on March 12, 1934, she is no longer with us, but she has left behind a legacy - The People Could Fly; MC Higgins, the Great; Zeely; Herstories; Planet of Junior Brown; Sweet Whispers, Brother Rush; Cousins. These are some of her amazing and award winning books that are rooted in the history and diversity of the African Americans experience. Virginia Hamilton has been an inspiration to me and to many talented creators working today.
In Extraordinary Magic: The Storytelling Life of Virginia Hamilton, I tell her story in sixteen free verse poems. When she was young, she was always listening to the stories, jokes and tall tales told by her parents, aunts and uncles and wrote everything down. Some of those stories found their way into her books. Check out Extraordinary Magic at your local library, bookstore or online bookseller.

Not a lot of drawing done this month. I’ve been caught up on deadline, extra busy at work, and lacking inspiration altogether. I used to be so inspired to draw but that well has gone dry for a while now. I’ve bought used copies of some of my favorite mangas as a teen in hopes that reading things I loved in my childhood will spark inspiration. In the meantime, the WRITING inspiration hasn’t depleted (thank god) and characters from all kinds of stories are whispering to me between bouts of editing AMFOT.
Well, here we are at the last week of Black History Month. For all you late starters here are a few of my books which introduce our youngest readers to some important history makers.
Extraordinary Magic: The Storytelling Life of Virginia Hamilton is a biography in verse of the Black children’s author of The People Could Fly, MC Higgins, the Great, and other amazing books.
Liftoff!: How the Apollo Moon Missions Made Alma Thomas’s Art Soar follows abstract painter Alma Thomas as she creates her painting Snoopy Sees a Sunrise and the Apollo mission that inspired it.
Not Done Yet: Shirley Chisholm’s Fight for Change, written by Tameka Fryer Brown, shares the story of this important change maker who was the first Black woman to run for president and an inspiration to leaders today.
Seeing Into Tomorrow: Haiku by Richard Wright is a collection of twelve haiku written by Wright and celebrates childhood connections with nature through the eyes of Black boys.
