Cyfres fach ‘Gwener/Fenws’ gan Iwan Bala, fel rhan o’r arddangosfa yn yr oriel
•
A small series ‘Gwener/Venus’ by Iwan Bala, on the gallery’s walls as part of his solo exhibition

Penblwydd Hapus mawr iawn i Iwan Bala yn 70! • A very Happy 70th Birthday to Iwan Bala!
Mae Iwan Bala wedi bod yn gonglfaen i ddiwylliant celf weledol Cymru ers dros bum degawd. Yn awdur, darlithydd ac artist profiadol, roedd yn aelod sefydlol o grŵp Beca ac mae’n nodedig am ei athroniaeth dros gelfyddyd sydd “o’r lle” ond yn fyd-eang yn ei pherthnasedd
•
Iwan Bala has been a cornerstone of the Welsh art scene for over five decades. An established writer, lecturer, and artist, he was a founding member of the Beca group and has consistently advocated for an art that is “of the place” but global in its relevance
A solo exhibition by Iwan Bala ‘Hel Meddyliau • Collecting Thoughts’ continues until this Sunday 17|05, and as part of the Roath Gallery Weekend [ @__________east ] programme of events, Iwan will be at the gallery 11-12pm Sunday morning for a talk amongst his exhibition [plus a little something to celebrate his birthday]

‘TAFFY WAS A WELSHMAN,
TAFFY WAS A THIEF
TAFFY CAME TO MY HOUSE AND STOLE A SIDE OF BEEF … [children’s 18/19/20th Century nursery rhyme]
So I went to Taffy’s homeland
with my English Empire wiles
and I stole his gold, stole his coal,
the slate, the iron, the water, the land
his house, the wood
l even stole the wind.
I stole and stole and kept it all...
And thats why I’m so wealthy
and he so f***ing poor’
Bala’s on-the-nose, dry response - his views clear and unquestionable with Cymru at the centre of it all

Iwan Bala ‘Yes Cymru [Llythyr Cariad]’ 2018/25, mixed media on indian Khadi paper, 76 × 56cm, 98 × 77cm framed
Yn ffigwr allweddol yn y broses o archwilio hunaniaeth ddiwylliannol a chartograffeg ddiwylliannol Cymru, mae gwaith Bala yn mynd â ni ar daith ddeallusol, reddfol drwy dirweddau cof, iaith a threftadaeth. Mae deuoliaeth yn drwyth yn ei waith; mae ei gelf ar yr un pryd yn wleidyddol ac yn bersonol iawn, gan gwmpasu’r coffaol a’r hynafol - tra’n parhau i fod wedi’u gwreiddio’n gadarn yn y presennol cyfoes
•
A pivotal figure in the exploration of cultural identity and the cultural cartography of Cymru, Bala’s work offers a visceral, intellectual journey through the landscapes of memory, language, and heritage. His practice is a masterclass in duality; his pieces are simultaneously politically charged and deeply personal, spanning the monumental and the ancient - while remaining firmly rooted in the contemporary present

NAWR • NOW: Iwan Bala ‘Hel Meddyliau • Collecting Thoughts’
Mae’r casgliad yma yn llawn motiffau ailadroddus o lên gwerin Cymru. Yn bresennol mae archeteipiau symbolaidd fel Y Fari Lwyd a Thafod y Ddraig; elfennau o’r Mabinogi, gan gynnwys Ysbadadden a Phair y Dadeni. Mae mapiau topograffig eiconig Bala, lle mae siâp Cymru yn cymryd ffurf fenywaidd, wedi bod yn bresenoldeb cyson yn ei waith dros y blynyddoedd. Mam, chwaer, cariad - mae’r cyfuniad agos hwn o berson a lle yn crynhoi perthynas Bala â’i wlad - mae ei waith celf yn un llythyr cariad dwfn, helaeth
•
This collection breathes with repeated motifs from Welsh lore. Present are symbolic archetypes such as Y Fari Lwyd and Tafod y Ddraig [The Dragon’s Tongue]; elements from the Mabinogi, including Ysbadadden and Pair y Dadeni [The Cauldron of Rebirth].Bala’s iconic topographical maps, where the shape of Cymru takes on a female form has been a constant presence in his work over the years. A mother, sister, lover - this intimate blending of person and place encapsulates Bala’s relationship with his country - his art practice is one deep, vast love letter to Cymru

TEN CARDIFF AND NATIONAL TRUST DINEFWR CO-PRESENT AN EXHIBITION OF LANDSCAPE-INSPIRED PAINTINGS BY JOHN ABELL, A TRUE CELEBRATION OF CYMRU’S LAND AND LEGEND - WITH A SPECIAL LAUNCH TO COINCIDE WITH LLANDEILO LITERATURE FESTIVAL
Mae'r ddihareb Gymreig "Dod yn ôl at fy nghoed" yn disgrifio'r teimlad o ddychwelyd i gyflwr meddwl cytbwys ac ailgysylltu â'r byd naturiol i ddod o hyd i dawelwch meddwl a lles emosiynol. Mae'n cynrychioli cysylltiad dwfn â'r amgylchedd, lle mae coed yn symboleiddio cof, llinach, a pherthyn; lloches ar gyfer iachâd ac adnewyddu.
This collection of paintings grew out of a journey across the landscape of the Bannau Brycheiniog, from the east to the west. In the summer of 2025, artist John Abell spent time wild camping and walking through these hills, immersing himself in the folk history, language and landscape of a place he has known all his life. These paintings share his vision of the wild places of South Wales.
Thanks to @celfcymruarts for supporting this project

DIWRNODE OLA • LAST FEW DAYS : Carwyn Evans ‘Peth’na’ comes to a close this Saturday 11|04
Mae gwaith Evans yn dathlu’r deunydd - boed yn naturiol, wedi’i ddarganfod, wedi’i grefftio â llaw, neu’n ddiwydiannol. Er bod rhai elfennau’n cael eu gweithio’n fanwl, mae eraill yn cael eu gadael yn eu cyflwr crai. Drwy broses fanwl o ddethol a chydosod, mae cyffyrddiad Midas Evans yn gorchuddio pob darn â thynerwch tawel, gan gydbwyso harddwch ffurf ag ystyr dwfn
•
Evans’s work celebrates the material — whether natural, found, handcrafted, or industrial. While some elements are meticulously worked, others are left in their raw state. Through a precise process of selection and assembly, Evans’s Midas touch cloaks every piece with a quiet tenderness, balancing beauty of form with profound cultural resonance
