관객은 이제 화면 속 인물들이 만들어내는 분위기, 즉 무드(Mood)에 침윤하게 된다. 전시의 3인은 인물들을 특정한 서사를 매개하는 도구로 사용하지 않는다. 다만, 물감의 되직한 점성, 솟구치는 붓질, 캔버스 내/외부의 인간 존재 간의 거리감을 통해 일종의 정조를 형성해나간다. 그것은 이미지임에도, 관객의 신체에 닿으며 촉지각적 감응을 발생시킨다. 이는 세 작가의 인물 형상이 안정된 도착점보다는 불안정한 상상력을 지향함에서 비롯된다.[…] 제인 바넷은 배치의 우발성으로 인해 사물의 능력이 창발되는 순간 정동을 느낄 수 있으며, 이러한 떨림은 인간에게 황홀감을 느끼게 하고 행위 역량을 강화할 수 있다 말한 바 있다. 회화적 물질로 이뤄진 인간 형상에서 파생되는 비언어적 감응. 아마 그것이 여기 그림들의 공통된 발언이라 할 수 있을 것이다. - 서문 발췌 The viewer becomes immersed in the atmosphere generated by these figures-that is, the mood. The three artists do not employ figuration as a vehicle for specific narratives; rather, they construct a tonality through the viscosity of paint, eruptive brushstrokes, and the distance between human presences within and beyond the canvas. Though image-based, this atmosphere reaches the viewer’s body, producing a tactile form of sensation. This emerges from the artists‘ orientation toward unstable imagination rather than stable resolution.[…] Jane Bennett has suggested that affect can be felt in moments when the capacities of things emerge through contingent assemblages, and that such vibrations may induce enchantment and enhance human agency. 송승은의 회화는 우화적 장면에서 시작된다. 교훈을 주는 우화는 압축된 언어로 인간사의 다양한 국면을 예리하게 전달한다. 작가는 우스꽝스러우면서도 적확하게 삶의 깨달음을 짚어내는 우화를 작업의 출발점으로 삼는다. 그리고 우화는 보통 구체적인 장면과 인물을 전면에 드러내기에, 작가의 화면에는 동화적 이미지들이 자주 등장한다. 그러나 그의 회화적 과정 혹은 결과물은 우화와 같이 명확한 결론에 도달하기보다, 여러 방향으로 의미가 발생할 수 있는 잠재태의 상태를 지향한다. 흐릿하게 번진 경계와 중첩된 색들은 서로를 밀고 당기며 안정된 윤곽을 탈주한다. 이 유령 같은 형상들은 사물을 인식하는 작가의 태도와 결부된다. 송승은은 어떤 장면을 마주했을 때 즉각적으로 설명할 수 없는, 말랑하고 가변적인 상태를 상상해본다. 그리고 그 상상은 내부에서부터 켜켜이 쌓여 올라오고, 이미지는 서서히 모습을 드러낸다. - 작품 소개글 발췌 Song Seung-eun‘s paintings begin with fable-like scenes. Fables that convey moral lessons sharply express the many facets of human life through condensed language. The artist adopts as a backdrop fables that are at once absurd and exact in grasping the insights of life. Fables, in general, unfold through concise narrative structures, bringing forward concrete scenes and figures. Accordingly, fairy-tale-like images frequently appear in the artist’s work. However, the painterly process, as well as the resulting images, do not move toward a clear conclusion in the manner of a fable. Instead, they tend toward a state of potentiality in which meanings can arise in multiple directions at once. Blurred edges and layered colors push against and pull away from one another, continually slipping out of stable contours. These ghostlike presences are bound up with the artist‘s way of perceiving things. When confronted with a scene, Song imagines a state that cannot be immediately explained, something soft, mutable, and resistant to fixation. 윤미류는 연출 사진과 회화 매체 사이의 간극을 즉흥적 붓질로 포착한다. [...] 주로 여성을 등장시킨다는 점, 카메라 광학을 회화에 접목한다는 점 등을 고려하면 할 수 있는 이야기의 갈래는 무궁하게 뻗어나간다. 그러나 이번 전시에서는 화면을 다루는 작가의 회화적 감각에 집중하여 그의 작업세계를 살펴보려 한다. [...]그림 속 인물들은 대부분 얼굴을 드러내고 있다. 보통 인물화나 초상사진을 보면 ’이 사람은 누구일까‘ 라는 객체에 대한 근본적 의문을 갖게 된다. 하지만 윤미류의 인물화 앞에선 그 물음이 떠오르지 않는다. 추측건대, 인물과 배경을 경중없이 대하는 작가의 회화적 태도가 화면 전체에 생기적 움직임을 부여하기 때문일 것이다. 그림 속 모든 행위소들은 서로 침범하며, 인물은 결국 주변에 동화되고야 만다. 그리하여 관람자는 인물이라는 단일한 객체가 아닌, 일종의 팽창된 풍경을 마주하게 된다. - 작품 소개글 발췌 Yoon Miryu captures the gap between staged photography and painting through spontaneous brushwork. [...]Considering her frequent use of female figures and her incorporation of camera optics into painting, the possible threads of interpretation extend in countless directions. This exhibition, however, focuses on the artist’s painterly sensibility in handling the picture plane in order to examine her artistic practice. [...]Most of the figures in her paintings reveal their faces. Ordinarily, when viewing portrait paintings or photographic portraits, one is inclined to ask the fundamental question: “Who is this person?” Yet before Yoon Miryu’s portraits, that question does not arise. Presumably, this is because the artist’s painterly attitude—treating figure and background without hierarchy—imbues the entire canvas with a sense of vital movement. All the elements within the painting encroach upon one another, and the figures ultimately become assimilated into their surroundings. 고경호는 개인의 역사에 잔존하는 인물, 사물, 혹은 풍경을 회화의 언어로 호명한다. 그것들은 보통 손으로 움켜잡을 수 없는 이미 지나가버린 대상들이며, 현재의 시점에서 포착되는 순간 낯선 거리감을 동반한다. 작가는 이 존재론적 간극을 파열하는 선과 면으로 이뤄진 형상으로 표현한다. 이번 전시에서 작가는 ‘상실된 관계’에 대해 생각해 본다. 한때 밀접했으나, 지금은 돌이킬 수 없이 멀어진 존재. 고경호는 소중했던 과거의 한 사람을 떠올리며 이를 푸른색의 초상화들로 구축한다. 연작 <진짜 마음>에서는 이러한 감정의 잔류가 확대된 얼굴과 정체성이 소거된 이목구비로 전환된다. 화면 중심에 놓인 얼굴들은 하나같이 인간 형상임을 가늠케 할 뿐, 누군가를 지시할 만큼의 구체성을 지니고 있진 않다. 몰개성적이고 정체불명의 한 인물이 자리한다. 얼굴의 절대성을 불명료하게 만드는 일은 명확한 의미의 규명으로부터, 대상의 예속으로부터 벗어나는 행위다. 따라서 화가가 덜 그려낼수록 더 많은 잠재성은 배태된다. - 작품 소개글 발췌 Koh Kyungho calls forth figures, objects, and landscapes that linger within personal history through the language of painting. These are usually subjects that have already passed beyond one’s grasp, and the moment they are captured from the present, they arrive accompanied by a strange sense of distance. The artist expresses this ontological gap through fragmented forms composed of ruptured lines and planes. In this exhibition, he reflects on the idea of “lost relationships” — beings who were once intimately close, yet have now become irreversibly distant. Recalling someone precious from the past, Koh constructs these memories as blue-toned portraits. In the series True Mind, the residue of such emotions is transformed into enlarged faces and facial features stripped of identity. The faces placed at the center of the canvas merely suggest a human form, yet they lack the specificity necessary to indicate any particular person. What remains is an anonymous and impersonal figure. To render the absoluteness of the face ambiguous is to resist the determination of fixed meaning and the subjugation of the subject. 인물의 형상성은 오랫동안 인식의 기준이었다. 눈앞에 놓인 얼굴과 몸은 서로를 구분하는 안정된 단서였고, 그것은 이미지를 가늠하는 최소한의 기준이기도 했다. 그러나 당대의 이미지들은 쉽게 생성되고 변형되며, 그 출처와 진위는 불분명해졌다. 본 전시는 불확실한 이미지 시대 속 흩어지고 변화하는 인물화들을 불러 모으며, 그것이 과연 무엇을 촉발하는지에 대한 궁금증에서 출발한다. 전시의 인물들은 재현에 대한 문제를 다루지 않는다. 실재와 얼마나 일치하는지 확인하는 질문 역시 무의미하다. 캔버스라는 지지체 위에 얹어진 물감과 행위자의 자유로운 제스처(gesture)가 만들어내는 비결정성으로 인해 인물은 진동하며 일시적으로 화면을 구성할 뿐이다. 그리고 그것은 목적지 없는 여정과도 같기에 보는 이로 하여금 무한한 가능성을 읽어내도록 한다. - 서문 발췌 The figuration of the human body has long functioned as a stable ground for perception. Faces and bodies placed before us served as reliable cues for distinguishing one another, and at the same time, as the minimal criteria for apprehending images. However, contemporary images are easily generated and transformed, rendering their origins and authenticity increasingly indeterminate. This exhibition gathers dispersed and shifting figurations within this uncertain image condition, departing from the question of what such images may set in motion. The figures in this exhibition do not concern themselves with the problem of representation. The question of how closely they correspond to reality is equally irrelevant. Due to the indeterminacy produced by paint laid upon the support of the canvas and the free gestures of the painter, the figure merely vibrates and temporarily composes the surface.
