Coming to Gallery 114 in May!
May 7th – May 30th First Thursday Opening: May 7th, 5-8 pm
In the North Gallery: Boundless/Duration: New Works by Phil Harris
In this exhibition, gallery member Phil Harris pairs two bodies of photographic work: Duration and Boundless. The Duration work started a decade ago, and involves patient, formal documentation of various processes of time and change. Boundless is a more recent, more open-ended and intuitive body of work, asking questions about light, color and form. Both types of work respond to the complexity, wonder and fluid nature of this living world.
Phil Harris has been a Portland-based photographer since the late Cretaceous. His work has been shown around the US and in Europe, and is in numerous public and private collections.
In the South Gallery: Threefold: Works About Water - by Donald Dahlke, Nancy Helmsworth, and Kimber Shiroma
In this intimate exhibition, three gallery artists share their ongoing work related to water. Their distinctive points of view make for a rich, complex conversation.
Donald Dahlke depicts a surreal view of a Caribbean-inspired place, invoking an experience of peace and serenity.
Nancy Helmsworth’s fragmented dimensional map illustrates the dissonant overlay of colonial imposition over the natural area that is now Northwest Portland.
Kimber Shiroma uses a large image of ocean waves. This work explores how we are part of the environments we move through, natural and political alike. It reflects on the feeling of being hit again and again by a force that does not pause, and the tension between resisting it and/or being carried with it.
Upcoming events:
Phil Harris Artist Q&A: Saturday, May 23rd, 10:30 – Noon
Gallery hours this week are 12-5pm, Thursday - Saturday
1100 NW Glisan, PDX

Today, Saturday 5/2, is the last day to see our April shows!
The gallery is open today until 5pm.
The gallery will be closed on Sunday 5/3
In the North Gallery: Explorations - New Paintings by Michael Spence
Michael Spence has been an abstract/figurative painter for years. But for this body of work, he decided on a risky new strategy: he would work on each painting in the series until it was finished, then use that picture as a jumping-off point for the next one. Then he would display all the paintings in the series as a sequence. This allows the viewer to follow his cul-de-sacs, solutions, decision-making, and discoveries in the studio alongside him, in real time. Michael says: “These new paintings are for me, an exploration into new nonrepresentational territory. The work is nonetheless influenced by the colors, shapes and emotional experiences I’m inspired by in nature.”
In the South Gallery: Love You More featuring artwork by Angela Riggs
“Love You More is a fiber art exhibit inspired by – and created from – the clothes that my grandmother knitted for me when I was a child. The exhibit title comes from a phrase that my grandmother, Mommy Ferne, always said to us: I love you more. Not more than you loved her, or more than someone else loved you, but just - more. More than she ever thought possible, more and more each day.
Mommy Ferne passed in 2023, and I’ve created the art for this exhibit in her honor and in her memory.”
