455 Days. For a long time, this project lived only inside me — in memory, in letters, in fragments I held onto when I had nothing else. Now it has walls. On May 8, my 4th solo and 1st abroad exhibition opens at Galleri Image in Aarhus, Denmark. Curated by the brilliant Farida Youssef, this is a body of work about time, memory, and identity — built from photographs, personal letters, and AI-reconstructed imagery. This is one of the most meaningful moments of my career. I’m incredibly proud and grateful. The opening will be followed by a public program for four days, in collaboration with Cuartor Farida Youssef, Professor Jacoub Lund, and Associate Professor Magdalena Regina Tyzlik-Carver from Aarhus University, about the relationship between memory and images and what happens when it is mediated by technology. If you’re in Denmark, I would love to see you there. 🤍 https://galleriimage.dk/en/event/455-days-by-mohamed-mahdy/

Talking About Photobooks 📒 On 26 October 2024 we will launch our new publication “Talking About Photobooks”! The book draws on the experiences and learnings of @photobookweek , a small festival dedicated for the last ten years to the photographic book as a medium of artistic production. The contributions are based on artist talks, panels, keynote speeches and presentations in the framework of the festival, edited and revisited to reflect the main aspects of the photobook. The brand-new book with contributions by some of the leading experts in the field was published by Photobook Week Aarhus in collaboration with Fw:Books @fw.books (Amsterdam). It was edited by Moritz Neumüller, together with Beate Cegielska, Jesper Rasmussen, and Anne Elisabeth Toft, with a superb design by Hans Gremmen @hans.gremmen and Kuan-Ting Chen. The plan for the event: 1 pm - Galleri Image will open its doors, where it will be possible to purchase the book. 2 pm - The talk programme will start (location: above the gallery in Aarhus Art Academy’s lecture hall). The talk programme: 🔸 Welcome with Beate Cegielska @beatecegielska , Director of Galleri Image 🔸 Moritz Neumüller, chief curator and editor of Talking About Photobooks 🔸 K.Chen @k.chen._ , graphic designer behind Talking About Photobooks 🔸‘Building the Museum from the Library’ with Angel Luis Gonzalez @bohoe , Director of @photoireland , designer, curator, and artist 🔸 ‘To See & Be Seen: Queer Photobooks’ with Debora Moritz @deboramoritz , curator at the Victoria & Albert Museum @vamuseum , London about Queer photobooks “Talking about Photobooks“ is published with the support of @nycarlsbergfondet and @dreyersfond . The special photobook event in 2024 is made possible through support from @augustinusfonden . 📸 @fw.books Looking forward to seeing you at Galleri Image!

In connection with 455 Days by Mohamed Mahdy, @galleriimage presents the seminar “Shifting Memories in 455 Days” on Tuesday 12 May. In 455 Days, Mahdy revisits his time as a military conscript — moving from archival #photographs to generated #images, where remembering becomes reconstruction. The seminar will focus on the relationship between memory and images, and what happens when it is mediated by technology. The seminar’s speakers: • Mohamed Mahdy @mohamedmahdyph (artist) • Jacob Lund @jacoblundimagespace (Professor, Aarhus University) • Magdalena Regina Tyzlik-Carver (Associate Professor, Aarhus University) • Farida Youssef (the curator) 📆 12 May, 4 pm 📍 Vestergade 29, Aarhus The seminar will be in English.

Galleri Image presents the exhibition 455 Days by Mohamed Mahdy @mohamedmahdyph , curated by Farida Youssef. The exhibition opens on Friday, 8 May 📸🥂 In 455 Days, Mohamed Mahdy searches for his memories as a military conscript. In Egypt, all abled men are required to serve in the army for a certain period of time. Mahdy began his service in 2020, lasting 455 days. For many conscripts, this marks the beginning of a new life — away from family, friends, and the lives they used to lead. Like his fellow conscripts, he was allowed only periodic days of vacation and sporadic short phone calls home. 📅 Friday, 8 May 2026, 4–6 p.m. 📍 Vestergade 29, Aarhus Mark your calendar with the following events: 〰️ GUIDED EXHIBITION TOUR 📅 Saturday 9 May at 2 p.m., Galleri Image With Mohamed Mahdy and Farida Youssef 〰️ SEMINAR: “Shifting Memories in 455 Days” 📅 Tuesday 12 May at 4 p.m., Galleri Image With Mohamed Mahdy, Professor Jacob Lund @jacoblundimagespace , and Associate Professor Magdalena Regina Tyzlik-Carver, discussing the relationship between memory and images, and what happens when it is mediated by technology. The seminar is moderated by Farida Youssef. 📸 Mohamed Mahdy, Memory crack, 2021 The exhibition is supported by The Danish Arts Foundation @statenskunstfond , The Augustinus Foundation @augustinusfonden , the Obel Family Foundation, The Louis-Hansen Foundation and The William Demant Foundation and Culture Resource (Al-Mawred Al-Thaqafy) @culture_resource .

A review of the #photobook Here, The Doors Don’t Know Me by Mohamed Mahdy @mohamedmahdyph Here, The Doors Don’t Know Me is a powerful #portrait of a disappearing community in Alexandria, Egypt, told from within. It combines photography, personal letters, and archival material to explore memory and loss. 📸 Mohamed Mahdy is behind the exhibition 455 Days, which opens in Galleri Image on 8 May 📸 The photobook is available for purchase at Galleri Image Bookshop 📚 🎬Credit: @shaqulain @hrynkevich.hanna

Don’t miss the opportunity — join us on 11 April for a conversation between artist Christine Clemmesen @christine_clemmesen and curator Inger Ellekilde Bonde @ingerellekilde about the exhibition Surface to Air, currently on display at @galleriimage ! The discussion will focus on the three series in the #exhibition, exploring parallel states of the now, temporal shifts, recollection, and expanded photographic language. Inspired by sideshadowing — from historical research, literary critique, and science fiction — the works investigate the “now” from parallel perspectives. Rephotographing, image layers, and reflections allow images to be seen through other images, creating depth and shifting perception. Clemmesen uses materials as part of the photographic process: paper, filters, tin casts, glass, marble, and silk act both as subject and base for #prints. Layering and rephotographing creates multiple perspectives within a single image, challenging our sense of time and space. Shadows, traces, and materials shift the relationship between subject, surface, and space, destabilizing and transforming the image. The work reflects pictorial memory structures, where layers and #rephotographing evoke recollection and experience. 📆 11 April, 2 pm 📍 Vestergade 29, Aarhus The conversation will be in Danish. 📸 @mikkelkaldal The event and exhibition are supported by The Danish Arts Foundation, The Augustinus Foundation, the Obel Family Foundation, The Louis-Hansen Foundation, The William Demant Foundation, and the L.F. Foght Foundation.
