Mermay 11- Mer-thology: Selkies 🦭

Fun fact about this piece: it was actually supposed to be for last year’s Mermay, but I didn’t finish it in time and ended up leaving it in the vault 😭
Then this year’s prompt list came out and I saw “Mer-thology”, and immediately knew this was the perfect moment to bring it back since Selkies are such iconic creatures in mythology and folklore (also, they have such interesting concepts).
For my interpretation, I imagined them less as beautiful women wearing seal skins and more as shapeshifting creatures that looks like seals. They mimic human appearance to interact with people… whether that interaction ends well or horribly depends on the Selkie 🩸

Mermay 10- Shellphone: Casey Becker and Ghostface 🔪

Here’s my first offering for this year’s Mermay 🐚🩸
This piece was actually inspired by a merman Ghostface concept I made a few years ago after a very random idea popped into my head 😂. I saw the “Shellphone” prompt and immediately thought: what if I fully developed the concept by reimagining the iconic Casey Becker scene from Scream, but in a mermaid horror version?? And well… here we are.
Every single year I tell myself I’m going to participate in Mermay, but April/May are always chaotic for me and I end up leaving everything for the last minute 😭 so this time I tried doing things differently and started working on the drawings as soon as the prompt list dropped 🗣️ honestly that alone already feels like a victory (I didn’t manage to make as many pieces as I wanted, but you’ll probably still see one or two more drawings from me before May ends).

Here’s Princess Daisy for the orange slot of my color wheel challenge 🧡
I wouldn’t call myself a die-hard Super Mario fan, but I’ve always found the characters and the world really charming and interesting to explore visually.
For this reimagined version of Daisy, I decided to fully lean into the concept of Sarasaland (a land with diverse Asian inspired influences) which also reminded me a lot of the aesthetic behind Agrabah from Aladdin.
I also took some inspiration from her Oasis skin, which felt like the perfect bridge between her original design and this reinterpretation ✨

First drawing of the year! Here’s my reinterpretation of Red and the Queen of Hearts from Descendants for the Color Wheel Challenge ❤️
A little bit of lore I came up with for this version in case you’re interested:
After Alice escaped Wonderland, the Queen of Hearts descended into an even deeper madness. Publicly humiliated and enraged that Alice had survived, she consulted the magical Looking Glass within her scepter and witnessed that Alice would one day return to destroy her.
Determined to prevent this fate, the Queen spared no mercy. She first ordered the beheading of her husband, the King of Hearts, whom she deemed too weak for failing to stop Alice’s escape. He was no longer of use. She then spread deadly traps throughout Wonderland and devised new methods of torture. The flamingos, responsible for the chaos during her last croquet match with Alice, were transformed by her magic into metal mallets lined with a sharp blade. If you defeat the Queen in the game, you earn the right to live as her servant, if you lose, your head is taken instantly. And as the greatest croquet player in the realm, her defeat is nearly impossible.
She also unleashed the Jabberwocky to patrol the skies, hunting down any conspirators who had aided Alice’s escape.

The best way to describe Wicked: For Good is a heartbreaking masterpiece 🥺❤️🩹such a beautiful ending to the story of Glinda and Elphaba.
I’ve always loved The Wizard of Oz, but I was never very interested in Wicked in particular, it just didn’t seem to be my cup of tea. But when the movie and cast were announced, I decided to give the book and the musical a chance and I completely fell in love.
I have been hanged for good 💚💖

I can’t believe we’re finally in Wicked: For Good week! 🩷💚 It’s been such a long wait, yet somehow it arrived so fast.
To celebrate, here’s my tribute to my favorite versions of the Fab Four of Oz, starting with Wicked: For Good obv✨
I know that, just like in the musical, they won’t be the main focus of the film and we won’t see Dorothy’s face. But they’re essential pieces of this story, and from everything we’ve seen so far, I’m sure I’ll love the way they’re portrayed.

I’m not a fan of anything related to sports, but I watched HIM the other day and really appreciated its horror and psychological aspects. It also has great performances and visuals, but the highlight for me was Elsie White! Such a mesmerizing character.
This year I got more into Julia Fox’s career and life (reading her book rn), and omg she’s so fascinating 🛐 I think the world needs more Julia Fox to heal.
