⁨ كان لي شرف عظيم ان اقدم تقسيم في مقام الحراب الحجازي خلال المؤتمر قدام نخبة الفنانيين الحجازيين مثل استاذ مدني عبادي وأستاذ جميل محمود وكذلك عمالقة الطرب السعودي، ومنهم محمد عبده و رابح صقر و اصيل ابو بكر وعازفي وفناني المفضل على آلة العود و هو السبب أنا اخترت ان أتعلم هذه الآلة، الدكتور عبادي الجوهر. . It’s not everyday you are requested to play a taqsim in maqam hirab (specific to the western region of Saudi Arabia called the Hejaz) in front of Abady al Johar and the entire cohort of modern Saudi musical giants.⁩

A huge thank you to @newyorkoudfestival for organizing such a beautiful event at the MET yesterday. It was a huge honor getting to perform with my dear colleague and friend @dr.bilenisiktas , who is an incredible musician and scholar. He graciously gifted me a copy of his recent biography of the great Sharif Muhiuddin Haidar-Targan, who originally connected us through research of his career here in New York City during the 1920s and early 1930s. We paid tribute to that historic legacy of the oud in NYC by performing a duet of Muhiuddin’s Samai Farah Fazah, which he recorded here in 1925 with the Syrian-American record company, Maloof. Also thanks to my man @alber.percussion for joining me for my set and also to the amazing @baharbadiei for joining our jam session before the concert. Be inspired by the oud, its musical history, and its artistic connections to The MET instrument collection. @metmusicalinstruments @metmuseum Dr. Bilen Işıktaş is a scholar-artist and Professor of Musicology at Istanbul University State Conservatory, currently a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University’s Department of Music. He gained international recognition in 2009 after receiving second prize at the International Oud Competition in Beirut. He holds a PhD in Musicology and Music Theory from Istanbul Technical University (2016). Işıktaş has performed concerts worldwide, and he has published several books and articles on Turkish music history and music culture. Dr. Gabriel Lavin is a musician, scholar, and educator based in Brooklyn, NY. His research on cultural history, media, and music has been published in a variety of international volumes and academic journals. Gabriel holds a PhD in Ethnomusicology from UCLA (2023) and recently presented and performed at the First Conference of Arab Music in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In addition to his research and writings, he maintains an active career as a performer, appearing with Naseer Shamma’s oud orchestra, the Los Angeles Arab Orchestra, the New York Arabic Orchestra, the Oman Oud Association, Mona Miari, the New York Arabic Chorus, among others.
