Thank you Andrew Mummery for interviewing me & Sam O’Donnel for hosting the launch of The Trouble with Space in Painting @bloomsburycontemporary !! A resonant Baptist hall in the gritty but wondrous #glasgow with a fine turnout. Also pleased to share my AR dancing sculpture— a collaboration with the inimitable Nathan Hauenstein! Cheers to Merlin James for his generosity and input!
As many former MADE residents know Isa, the beloved Grabado instructor has many talents, well one of them is creative make up. This time @isabetabel_vera asked us to be the model for her to practice for Dia de Muertos/Day of the Dead as she is pretty much already booked for the 1st and 2nd of November for make up clients on 30min slots 😱. Enjoy her beautiful work of these two model exercises and the process. #makeup #dayofthedead #diademuertosmexico #colorful #mexico #traditions #culture #life #folklore #made #sma

El Convite de Los Locos or Parade of the Crazies happened and it was so much fun. Although the weather forecast predicted rain, nothing could stop SMA for having this celebration. Los Locos as is known by locals, it is one of the most awaited street parties in town, where thousands of families get together to dance, catch candy, listen to loud music and yes admire the incredible and playful customs participants create.
San Pascual Bailon is celebrated as the patron saint of the farmers and for a good rain season, which definitely this year has come earlier.
The parade is a fantastic cultural tradition to witness and to learn from the many family and community values in Mexico.
PS Former MADE residents remember the Locos? Of course you do 😬😉 #parade #celebrations #fun #gathering #families #custom #music #candy #cultural #traditions #rain #farmers #values #community #made #sma #méxico
At MADE we cannot had been more fortunate for having Chris as a part of the April Cohort. @ckanyusik is originally trained in Ceramics and Sculpture, and currently an Associate Professor at Utah State University. At MADE, he decided to take Cartoneria as his chosen class; let’s just say he really explored and pushed to many directions the foundation -paper & engrudo- of this creative form of art.
Chris walked, observed,
and lived SMA to then to come back to MADE to dive full into creating. He experimented with many types of paper, including amate paper (made from bark of trees) and engrudo (glue made of flour and water). During his time here, he was really into the cobble stone streets of SMA, so he decided to make imprints of them, but also created these skin/shells of separate cobbles bringing beautiful juxtapositions of hardiness and lightness, form and void, and so on. In addition, in his Cartoneria piece with Diego, he added a beautiful detail of bugambilia petals collected at MADE and around town. We thank Chris for coming to the program, for gifting us with his easy going and kind personality. Stay in touch amigo! #diveinto #creativity y #havingfun #enjoying #walk #observed #live #town #imprinting #cobblestones #juxtaposition #light #void #form #cartoneria #foundation #easygoing #made #sma #méxico
La Quema de Judas or the Burning of Judas was the last Easter celebration some MADE Creatives in Residence were able to experience along a huge crowd. Enjoy the explosion of the Judas done by fireworks placed on their waistline of (built on Cartoneria) ahhh and wait for the middle of the reel, I guess that personaje couldn’t be excluded. Over the weekend, more specifically Friday, MADE Creatives in Residence experienced Viernes de Dolores or Our Lady of Sorrows celebration. Easter has many days of observance, but that specific day people in San Miguel de Allende decorate fountains, business and their homes with altars. Hundreds of locals and people visiting town walk around admiring the beautiful creations while receiving delicious mini popsicles, ice cream, different types of home made natural waters and even conserva (specific fruits with honey and cane sugar), this as an offering showing hospitality and compassion. Whether one is religious or not, the values and principles behind all these celebrations are inspiring, and to see how they bring together community and joy to all ages is quite incredible to witnessed it. #viernes #dolores #virgen #sorrow #altar #celebrarion #gifts #ofrenda #popsicle #icecream #fruitwater #conserva #community #people #gettogether #principles #values #honor #devotion #família #made #sma #mexico
The procession of El Señor de la Columna is 202 years old and MADE Creatives in Residence from the April cohort were able to witnessed and be part of it.
Three religious catholic figures get transported on foot through the night by a congregation from the town of Atotonilco. While this is happening, in San Miguel Allende believers work for 10-12 hours creating colorful decorations and saw dust carpets for a mile+ long where the procession takes place during the morning, such an ephemeral gesture as the saw dust carpets gets destroyed during the procession. Between hundreds of Mexicans, the resident admired the dedication, faith, community organizing, creativity and so on, as well as smell of candles, incenses and chamomile spread all over the streets while hearing prayers, songs and fireworks. This wonderful experience and many other to come this month will be taken by the residents as part of their memories during their time at MADE. #early #morning #ocean of #people #celebreting #together #admiring #creativity #community #hardwork #faith #beauty #values #principles #life #memories #chamomile #fireworks #sawdust #carpet #experience #made #sma #méxico
